LL:DDV: Public meeting: Free Tian Chua

2003-05-29 Thread AAWL
Public meeting:

Tuesday 3 June at 6 pm
Evatt Room, Trades Hall
54 Victoria Street Carlton South

Malaysian labour activist Tian Chua has been in jail for two years.
He was jailed without trial under the Internal Security Act because he
organised for workers' rights.

Tian's detention is now being reviewed. This is a critical time for all
workers and union to demand his release.

Come to the public meeting to hear Zaitun Toni Kassim from Suaram
Malaysia report on the international campaign to free Tian.

Zaitun Toni Kassim is a long time women's rights and democratic rights
activist in Malaysia. She was also an opposition candidate against the
Mahathir government at the last Malaysian federal elections.

At this meeting there will also be a report by Piergiorgio Moro on the
10th Anniversary commemoration of the Kader toy factory fire held on 10
May in Bangkok.

Piergiorgio was the AAWL delegate to the commemoration and attended the
health safety meetings and protests held in Bangkok to mark ten years
since the tragedy in which 188 workers died because of the negligence of
the company. This report is part of our continuing support for right of
workers in the Asia Pacific region to demand health safety in their
workplace.

LL:DDV: Defend the building unions

2003-02-02 Thread * AAWL
Rally: Defend the building unions
6 February at 9am at Trades Hall

Martin Kingham will appear in the Magistrates Court on 6 February facing
charges arising out of the anti-union Cole Royal Commission

The VTHC urges affiliates and activists to join a rally in defence of
the building unions and Martin Kingham on 6 February at 9am at Trades Hall.

VTHC secretary Leigh Hubbard has warned trade unionists to expect
increased anti-union activity from the Federal Government when the Cole
Royal Commission report is handed down on 31 January.

Mr Hubbard said the Howard Government would use the Commission's

Defend the building unions
Defend union rights

Rally Thursday 6 February 9 am
Trades Hall, 54 Victoria Street, Carlton South

The VTHC urges affiliates and activists to join a rally in defence of
the building unions and Martin Kingham on 6 February at 9am at Trades Hall.

Martin Kingham will appear in the Magistrates Court on this day facing
charges arising out of the anti-union Cole Royal Commission.

VTHC secretary Leigh Hubbard has warned trade unionists to expect
increased anti-union activity from the Federal Government when the Cole
Royal Commission report is handed down on 31 January.

Mr Hubbard said the Howard Government would use the Commission's
findings to justify the intensification of attacks on basic union rights.

The Royal Commission has been exposed as a blatant exercise in union
bashing. The government has wasted over 60 million dollars in tax payers
money in an attempt to destroy the CFMEU.

LL:DDV: Melbourne Rally to defend the CFMEU

2002-10-17 Thread aawl

Defend the CFMEU

Rally: Thursday 24 October at 8:45 am
Trades Hall, 54 Victoria Street, Carlton South

March to the Magistrates Court at 9 am

The attack on CFMEU is a threat to all - Their rights are our rights

The Victorian Trades Hall Council urge all unions to rally on 24 October
against the Cole Royal Commission's attack on the Construction Forestry
Mining Energy Union (CFMEU).

Martin Kingham, CFMEU Secretary, has been charged under the Royal
Commission Act (1902) for refusing to endanger the livelihoods of his
members. He was charged for failing to produce a document relating to
the funding and organisation of union training and will appear before
the Melbourne Magistrates Court on 24 October.

Victorian Trades Hall Council secretary Leigh Hubbard has called on all
affiliated unions to attend the rally in defence of Martin Kingham who
is now personally under attack from the Royal Commission for the 'crime'
of acting to protect the interests and privacy of his members.

Leigh Hubbard said:

We urge all union members to take a stand in support of basic trade
union rights.

The Howard Government has targeted the CFMEU because they represent the
strength of militant unionism.

Why does the Government seem intent on crushing the strongest sections
of the union movement? For the simple reason that strong, militant trade
unionism provides the best protection and conditions for ordinary =
working people.

LL:INFO: Nike demonstrators cleared of charges

2002-10-16 Thread AAWL

Nike demonstrators cleared of charges

On Monday 14 October at the Melbourne's Magistrate Court the case
against the five defendants who were arrested outside Nike was found to
be insufficient and it was dismissed.

The five demonstrators had been arrested and charged with besetting
the Nike premises and obstructing police on 1 June 2001. The arrests
had been made in the tenth week of weekly Friday night demonstrations
for workers rights held outside the Melbourne Nike store.

During the case it was stated in evidence that the police had mobilised
210 police officers on the night, in order to end the demonstration. The
court case lasted four days and up to a dozen police gave evidence for
the prosecution.

The five defendants wish to thank their legal team for their excellent
work.

The defendants also wish to thank all the people who attended the court
case to provide moral support, and all the people who sent solidarity
messages.

LL:DDV: Nike court case in Melbourne

2002-10-01 Thread AAWL

The Nike demonstrators face court.

On 1 June 2001 five pro-labour activists were arrested outside the
Nike superstore in Swanston Street, Melbourne.

They were part of a demonstration that was in support of the right to
organise for workers in factories producing Nike products, and against
the anti-labour activities of the Nike company.

The demonstrations were part of an international network that works
towards improving the conditions of workers in the footwear and apparel
industries.

The five demonstrators were all charged with 'besetting' and 'not
following police orders'. They are all pleading not guilty.

The trial will begin on Tuesday 8 October at 10 am at the
Magistrates Court, Corner William and Lonsdale Streets, Melbourne.

You are encouraged to show your support for workers rights by attending

PRESS RELEASE
from Aboriginal Catholic Ministry, Melbourne

JUSTICE BASED ON TRUTH VIGIL

The Aboriginal Catholic Ministry Melbourne is holding a VIGIL on November 1
- 2. This significant gathering is an opportunity to ceremonially
acknowledge the Aboriginal people who were massacred during the
colonisation period in Victoria.

The gathering is intended to be a time for remembering, honouring, healing
and above all an opportunity to present the truth. People will gather at
11.30 pm on November 1 and the Vigil will commence at 12 midnight and
conclude at 7 am on November 2. Every hour candles will be lit to
acknowledge the massacre sites across Victoria and a narrative of each site
will be told.

It is expected that this gathering will add significantly to the continuing
Reconciliation process in Victoria, by bringing forward information in a
way that promotes an honest remembering of this part of our history and by
bringing non-Indigenous and Indigenous peoples together in a unique and
positive commemorative gathering.

The venue is the Aboriginal Advancement League Oval corner St. George's

On the afternoon of June 8 the Asia Pacific Labour Solidarity Conference on
Neoliberalism in Sawangan south of Jakarta, organised by the Indonesian NGO
INCREASE, Indonesian Centre for Reform and Social Emancipation, was
violently broken up by Indonesian secret police and their right-wing
militia thugs.

Courageous attempts by the conference organisers failed to prevent the
police from herding 32 foreign participants onto police trucks and cars to
be driven to the central Jakarta police station. There they were detained
without charge by police intelligence and their passports removed.

The police left the conference site mindful that the machete- and
sickle-wielding militia thugs had stayed behind. At approximately 7pm they
launched an attack on the remaining Indonesian participants, who had to run
for their lives. A number were injured and two people were hospitalised,
one requiring emergency surgery for a slashed artery.

This vicious attack on democratic rights is of serious concern: it
signifies the beginning of an attempt by the right wing to return to the
worst of the New Order repression experienced under the former Suharto
regime. It is also reminiscent of the actions carried out by the Indonesian
armed forces in collaboration with militia thugs in East Timor in 1999 and
by similar groups in Indonesia against the democratic forces.

It is now clear that the visa violations were really an excuse used by
the police intelligence to close down the conference. The Indonesian
immigration authorities have stated that the foreign participants using a
short stay pass were entitled to attend seminars and did not breach any laws.

According to a senior official at the Director-General for Immigration,
Mursanuddin Gani, who was quoted in the June 11 Jakarta Post, the police
acted on their own. The police could have contacted our office prior to
raid, but as far as I know there was no notification . If they [the
foreigners] really violated immigration laws, why were they released? . The
police can only summons the organizers of the seminar for questioning, not
necessarily question the foreigners.

Gani pointed out in the same interview that foreigners visiting Indonesia
for special events like conferences and business meetings were eligible for
the visa-on-arrival facility, the same visa obtained by the Australian
participants at the INCREASE conference. Despite this, the Australian
government was quick to echo the Indonesian secret police and insist that
the detainee's plight was the result of a visa misunderstanding.

We, the undersigned supporters of democracy and labour rights, condemn this
brutal repression of democractic rights and free speech. The Australian
government's silence on this incident shows just how out of step it is with
the democratic aspirations of both the Australian and Indonesian people.

The vicious attack on the Sawangan conference should also make it clear
that any renewal of military ties with Indonesia will give political
support to the sorts of anti-democratic actions carried out by the police
and right-wing militia thugs.

We demand that you as Minister for Foreign Affairs condemn this blatant
attack on free speech and democratic rights and that you speak out against
acts of repression. Australia's foreign policy must be geared towards
assisting the growth and extension of democracy in Indonesia. It should not
allow the former special relationship - cultivated for 32 years by the
Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Suharto regime - to take
precedence over democratic and human rights. Australians should not be
advised against attending political meetings in Indonesia - the latest
excuse used by DFAT - just as Indonesians should be able to enjoy freedom
of association and speech in their own country.

LL:ART: May Day greetings

2001-04-26 Thread AAWL

May Day 2001

The First of May has been an important day for the international working
class since 1889 when the day was chosen to commemorate the massacre by
police of striking workers in the US city of Chicago.

The First of May is the day when the working class celebrates its class and
power and asserts its rights as separate and irreconcilable to those of the
capitalist class.

In the Asia Pacific region, massive industrialisation over the last 50 years
has seen the size of the working class grow by the millions. Faced with
repression in many countries, it has nevertheless been able to organise and
take actions to further its interests. The ability of the Asian working
class to express itself on the First of May has always been conditioned by
the relative strength of the political parties which represent it.

During the 1970's under the dictatorship of President Marcos, Philippine
workers were at the forefront of the anti dictatorship struggle and reached
the peak of their power in the mid 1980's. In those days, May Day in Manila
had become a massive show of force with international guests coming from
countries all around the world to express unity with the Filipino comrades.

In Korea, the working class had to reorganise itself after the defeats of
the early post war years under a series of repressive military regimes.
Notwithstanding huge losses, the workers began forming working class
organisations in the 1970's and by the mid 1980's were able to start
challenging the power of the military regimes. Even in the present the
Korean working class continues to face massive obstacles under the economic
ravages of capitalism and the repressive actions of the state.

Indonesia was the country in the post was era that had the strongest
organised working class of the region both at the industrial and political
level. The military coup of 1965 was accompanied by a two year long massacre
of the left which totally liquidated both the industrial and political
organisations of the workers. While this crime set back the working class by
decades, Indonesian workers nevertheless reorganised as the country went
through a long period of industrialisation. By the late 1990's, the
Indonesian working class was able to use its power to help in the overthrow
of the Soeharto dictatorship. The post Soeharto era sees a number of
political parties and workers' organizations, with May Day an important
symbol of the power of workers.

In the region two most populous countries, China and India, the working
class is currently facing very different political climates. In India, where
Communist parties have historically been strong and May Day has always been
celebrated, the intensifying pressures of capitalism are nevertheless
disorientating sections of the working class and leading them into the arms
of reactionary nationalist parties. In China, under a climate of
intensifying capitalist restructuring, workers are not only fighting back on
the shopfloor but are also trying to find new forms of political
organisations that will defend their interests.

In Australia, while May Day was celebrated every year, it was on a weekend
and not on the day itself. The year 2001 marks a turning point for the
Australian working class as a number of left wing organizations, as well as
militant unions and labour councils, have planned to rebuild May Day and
hold political rallies on the day itself.

While this process by Australian workers of using May Day to politically
assert their independence as a class is just beginning and still full of
contradictions, it is one necessary step in the strengthening of the
Australian working class. We hope that in the future, actions on May Day
will grow and be coordinated internationally around the region, as a truly
international day of working class power.

It is in this spirit that AAWL wishes to send solidarity greetings to all
those working class organization that are planning actions on May Day and to
wish success to your respective struggles. We hope that in the coming years
we will strengthen our relationships and support each other in the struggles
ahead.

We look forward to receiving your message of greetings to be read out at May
Day rallies in Australia.

In solidarity

LL:INFO: New Zealand steel workers strike

2000-06-19 Thread AAWL

Around 1100 workers at the Glenbrook steel mill, 58-km south-west of
Auckland, New Zealand are on strike.

A spokesperson for the Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union, which
represents around 1,000 of the mill-workers, said slow progress was being
made in the pay negotiations with mill management.

The workers did not to have a pay rise last year as the mill was not
performing well, however the union said the company has this year recorded
a record profit of about $56m after tax.

Background:
In 1997, Alison Thorne, a leader of the local AEU branch at Northern
Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT) and two fellow unionists were retrenched
in the
middle of a bitter industrial dispute and replaced by low paid casual staff.
The branch stopped work, branded the action a union busting provocation and
established the NMIT Unionists Campaign Committee. The case ended up before
the Discrimination Panel of the Victorian Civil and Administrative Appeals
Tribunal. The ruling criticised NMIT for discriminating against unionists
and set an important precendent for all workers by expanding the definition
of protected industrial activity. The dogged resistence of the NMIT
Unionists Campaign sent a powerful message to management that a group of
workers were prepared to stand up to the ongoing harassment and
intimidation. The NMIT Unionists Campaign Committee is very proud of this
achievement. But, there is still a hefty legal bill to pay. You are invited
to celebrate the achivements of this struggle and help clear the debt at
this last ever function hosted by NMIT Unionists Campaign Committee.
Be there!

LL:AA: Union boycott against Fiji coup

2000-05-29 Thread AAWL

Unions around the Asia Pacific region have started putting into place Fiji
boycott strategies.

The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) has announced that transport
boycotts will be in place from today, targeting sea transport, air
transport and communication.

ACTU President Sharan Burrow said Australian unions were united in their
determination to support the democratically elected Government. "Australian
unions will do whatever we can to help our Fijian neighbours. Boycotts and
pickets will be applied until democracy is restored to Fiji." said Ms
Burrow. Australian Unions will also mount pickets at the Fiji Embassy in
Canberra.

The Asia Pacific Regional Organisation of the International Council of Free
Trade Unions (ICFTU-APRO) has faxed the President of Fiji demanding the
safe release of all hostages.

The fax stated: "We pledge our full support to the Fiji Trades Union
Congress in their efforts to restore democracy, ensure respect for the Fiji
Constitution and defend the rights of the working people of Fiji... We call
upon you to immediately ensure the release of the hostages, the
reinstatement of the legitimate Government and the full respect of the Fiji
Constitution."

LL:DDV: Action for East Timorese Hostages

2000-03-29 Thread AAWL

X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.00.2615.200

Demand the release and safe return of East Timorese hostages

Friday 31 March, at 3 pm
Indonesian Consulate,
72 Queens Road
Albert Park
Melbourne

In September last year the Indonesian military forcibly removed hundreds of
thousands of East Timorese to concentration camps in West Timor.
Today between 50,000 and 80,000 hostages remain trapped in these camps and
in other parts of Indonesia, facing intimidation and violence from the
Indonesian military and militia who control the camps, as well as
life-threatening malnutrition and disease.
Under these conditions it is impossible for hostages to make a free choice
as to whether or not they wish to return to their homeland.
Death threats against those who attempt to do so remain common.
Yet the Indonesian government has declared that those who do not return by
31 March face transmigration to other parts of Indonesia.

Organised by the Free Timor Campaign in consultation with CNRT

LL:AA: Stop repression in Malaysia.

2000-01-14 Thread AAWL

The Malaysian government has begun an attack on opposition groups.

The UMNO / National Front government of Prime Minister Mahathir is
arresting leaders of opposition groups and is attempting to close down
opposition papers.

This attack is aimed at discouraging popular protests against corruption
and to stop Malaysian workers and democratic rights activists organising
independent campaigns.

The following people have been arrested:
Mohamed Ezam Mohd Noor, Parti KeADILan youth chief, arrested on charges of
sedition or under Official Secrets Act, presumably for writing articles
against government corruption.

Karpal Singh, Democratic Action Party MP, Lawyer to jailed ex-deputy prime
minister Anwar Ibrahim, arrested for comments made in court alleging an
attempt to poison Anwar.

Zulkifli Sulong, Harakah editor, arrested under the Sedition Act .

Chia Lim Thye, printing press company owner, Harakah printer, arrested
under the Sedition Act.

Marina Yusof, Parti KeADILan vice president, arrested on charges of sedition.

Police has issued reports against the following newspapers:
Utusan Malaysia
Harakah

This may be the beginning of a wider attack against all opposition groups,
and against remaining democratic rights in Malaysia.

Protest statements have been issued by:
Southeast Asian Press Alliance
Reporters Sans Frontieres
Committee to Protect Journalists

Defend Malaysian workers and activists for democratic rights, who are now
under attack.

LL:ART: Death on the picket line

2000-01-10 Thread AAWL

Edited summary
Original message from: John Maynard [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Asia Pacific Workers Solidarity Links, Aotearoa New Zealand
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Sent: Monday, January 03, 2000

FATALLY INJURED ON THE PICKET LINE

A supporter on a New Zealand Waterfront Workers Union picket line died on 31
December two days after having been run over on the picket line by a
four-wheel drive vehicle.

Ms Christine Clarke had joined the port workers' picket during a dispute at
the Port of Lyttelton near the main South Island city of Christchurch.
Unionised port workers and their supporters were stopping vehicles at the
port and handing out leaflets explaining their opposition to the Lyttelton
Port Company's plan to contract out the loading of coal.

Christine Clarke had been standing on the peaceful picket line with her
hands on the bonnet of the stationary four-wheel drive vehicle. The driver,
a local importer who had already been through the picket line several times
that day, became abusive. Christine Clarke was run over when the vehicle
was suddenly driven directly at her and then driven off at speed.

Christine suffered head injuries and although operated on for serious brain
injuries she did not regain consciousness and died in hospital. Police have
arrested the driver who will be facing serious driving charges in relation
to causing Christine's death.

The dispute about the contracting out of coal loading has been temporarily
settled. The company has agreed to further talks and will not contract out
the work for at least another month. However the issues at the centre of
the dispute have not been resolved.

Christine Clarke's death is only the second at a picket line in Aotearoa/New
Zealand. Miner Frederick Evans died after a baton blow to the head during
the Waihi
miners' strike in 1912.

The memory of Christine Clarke and her peaceful direct action in solidarity
with workers' protesting against the contracting out of their jobs will live
on in the trade union history of Aotearoa/New Zealand.

LL:Info: Indonesian demo against military

1999-09-25 Thread aawl

On Thursday 23 September over 10,000 people protested in Jakarta against the
new Indonesian State Security Bill.

Demonstrations continued into Friday, despite frequent police attacks.
The police shot at the demonstrators, and attacked them with baton charges,
rubber bullets and tear gas.
At least three demonstrators were killed. Many more demonstrators were
seriously injured.

The demonstration was organised by Indonesian independent trade unions,
students and journalists fighting for democratic rights. This demonstration
followed smaller demonstrations against the State Security Bill on Tuesday
and Wednesday.

Following the demonstrations the Indonesian parliament has suspended
progress in implementing the State Security Bill.

The State Security Bill is intended to grant the Indonesian military (TNI)
unlimited authority in a state of emergency.
The criteria for imposing a state of emergency is left open to
interpretation by the Indonesian President and TNI.
The bill allows for incarceration without trial and the abolition of press
freedoms. It resembles the subversion law of 1963, revoked last year in the
wake of Suharto's resignation in May 1998.

TNI is attempting to rebuild its command position in politics before the new
parliament is seated on October 1.
The Indonesian military is not voluntarily divesting itself of its political
power, as most Indonesians had hoped.
It is important to support the workers and students who are fighting against
military repression.

Defend the rights of the East Timorese people who expressed their wish for
national self-determination.
Defend the displaced East Timorese refugees.

Support the Indonesian students fighting for democratic rights.
Support the Indonesian trade unions SBSI and FNPBI that have recognised the
East Timorese people's rights to national self-determination, and who are
fighting against military repression.

1999-09-14 Thread aawl

On Friday 10 September 1999 over 25,000 people demonstrated in
Melbourne
against the murders of East Timorese people by the Indonesian military.

The demonstration was organised by the Victorian Trades Hall Council

the East
Timorese people's right to national self-determination. SBSI has issued a

A Free Timor Coalition has been formed to coordinate protests in Melbourne.
The coalition includes the CNRT, the VTHC, the Australian Council of Trade
Unions, the National Union of Students and many other groups.

The Free Timor Coalition has called two more demonstrations in
Melbourne, demanding the removal of Indonesian military from East
Timor, the resettlement of East Timorese refugees, and the supply of

LL:DDV:Support Indonesian workers; Defend the East Timorese people

1999-09-10 Thread AAWL

Defend the East Timorese people.
Support Indonesian workers.

In May 1998 Indonesian workers and students brought down Suharto.

Today the Indonesian military want to control everything they consider
Indonesia, including East Timor.

Today the East Timorese people are being murdered for expressing their
desire for national self-determination.

The Indonesian independent trade unions FNPBI and SBSI recognise the East
Timorese people's right to national self-determination. Today FNPBI
officials are in jail for their union activities and the East Timorese
unionists are under military attack.

Stop the Indonesian military.

The Australian Council of Trade Unions and the Victorian Trades Hall Council
have endorsed industrial action against Indonesian oil shipments, airline

Subject: Industrial action to stop Indonesian army

To Whom It May Concern,

The Indonesian Prosperity Trade Union (SBSI) supports the actions of the
Australian trade unions to pressure the Indonesian government to stop the
violence in East Timor and recogonise its right to self-determination.
Though we are opposed to sweeping economic sanctions, we believe these
workers actions are sharp political protests that can help force the
Indonesian government to comply with the May agreement. We are concerned
about governmental economic sanctions because they can hurt workers and
because the Indonesian military may use them to gain an upper hand in the
domestic political struggle.

Nevertheless, we very much support the pickets and industrial action from
the Australian trade unions.

Paul Keys

LL:PR:Malaysian statement on East Timor

1999-09-09 Thread AAWL

From: suaram [EMAIL PROTECTED]

7th Sept 1999

STATEMENT ON EAST TIMOR

Solidaritas Timor Timur Malaysia strongly condemns the Indonesian government
and Armed Forces for their violent reaction to East Timor's vote for
independence carried out under the auspices of the United Nations last week.

The East Timorese have made a legal and valid rejection of Indonesia's
proposal for autonomy and voted for independence after 24 years of
Indonesia's illegal occupation of East Timor. This vote is the choice and
right of the people of East Timor, and should be immediately recognised by
the Indonesian administration. It is too late to intimidate the East
Timorese with further violence, killing and mayhem - their decision for
INDEPENDANCE is made.

The reaction of the pro-autonomy militia groups and the Indonesian Armed
Forces, which Solidaritas Timor Timur Malaysia considers to be one and the
same, is reminiscent of the way Jakarta was plunged into violence in May
1998 when the Indonesian people demanded the resignation of the previous
President Suharto.

The reaction of the pro-autonomy militia groups and the Indonesian Armed
Forces negates General Wiranto's commitment to reforming the misdeeds of the
New Order under the rule of the previous President Suharto.

The reaction of the pro-autonomy militia groups and the Indonesian Armed
Forces is completely counter productive to establishing a peaceful
settlement with East Timor as an independent state.

Solidaritas Timor Timur Malaysia strongly urges the Indonesian government
and Armed Forces to stop perpetrating violence against the East Timorese
people and immediately recognise their choice for independence.
