Drawing on experiences visiting asylum seekers inside Villawood Detention Centre she will argue that there are instances in which only fiction (including theatre) can adequately express the shades of truth in a human crisis This lecture is for those interested in contemporary Australian society and the ways Australians tell stories about themselves. Linda Jaivin is an essayist, commentator and author of four internationally published novels: Eat Me, Rock n Roll Babes from Outer Space, Miles Walker You're Dead, and Dead Sexy as well as the non-fiction Confessions of an S&M Virgin and The Monkey and the Dragon. An acclaimed actor and playwright in Iran, 29 year old Shahin was forced to flee his country after a play he wrote was deemed anti-government. Shahin's journey took him to Australia via Malaysia and Indonesia where the boat he was travelling on was intercepted at Ashmore Reef.
