Overland 172 Lecture & Launch
LINDA JAIVIN presents TRUTH ON THE BORDER
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Linda Jaivin will talk about the limitations of 'objective reporting' in
expressing the uncomfortable truths of social and political situations.
Drawing on experiences visiting asylum seekers inside Villawood
Detention Centre she will argue that there are instances in which only
fiction (including theatre) can adequately express the shades of truth
in a human crisis

This lecture is for those interested in contemporary Australian society
and the ways Australians tell stories about themselves. Linda Jaivin is
an essayist, commentator and author of four internationally published
novels: Eat Me, Rock n Roll Babes from Outer Space, Miles Walker You're
Dead, and Dead Sexy as well as the non-fiction Confessions of an S&M
Virgin and The Monkey and the Dragon.

REFUGITIVE
presented by New Mercury Theatre
A Melbourne Fringe Festival event
------------------------------------------------
Iranian refugee Shahin Shafaei's acclaimed one man show Refugitive,
about the 22 months he spent incarcerated in the Curtin Detention
Centre, has been touring nationally and now comes to Melbourne for the
Fringe Festival.

An acclaimed actor and playwright in Iran, 29 year old Shahin was forced
to flee his country after a play he wrote was deemed anti-government.
Shahin's journey took him to Australia via Malaysia and Indonesia where
the boat he was travelling on was intercepted at Ashmore Reef. He was
taken to the infamous Curtin Detention Centre near Port Hedland (WA)
where a new struggle for survival began.

TRAGIC AT THEIR AGE
presented by Smart Arts Productions
A Melbourne Fringe Festival event
-----------------------------------------------------------------
From chicks to chooks, and all the disasters in between! Tragic at
their Age presents a show for the mature fringe dweller. A fun night of
women behaving badly, struggling to hold back the ravages of time and
gravity, but succeeding only in growing old disgracefully and resisting
all attempts to embrace their inner chook.

Tragic at their Age will leave the audience with an inner glow, knowing
that their own lives are nowhere near as tragic as those of our three
heroines.

Tragic at their Age is a 'best of' the hugely popular shows by Maureen
Sherlock, 'Molls' & 'Housewives Playtime', which enjoyed two sell-out
seasons each in Adelaide.

UNDOMESTICATED
presented by Baggage Productions
A Melbourne Fringe Festival event
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Undomesticated is another snappy collection of scenes and sketches from
the irrepressible creators of Femme (Melbourne Fringe Festival 2000) and
Breeding Contempt and Other Mating Games (Fringe 2001, Melbourne Comedy
Festival 2002).

Using a minimum of props and costumes, these shows rely instead on the
sharpness of the writing and skill of the performers to bring to life
the array of characters and situations in the spotlight. This minimalism
facilitates a cracking pace, constantly surprising and delighting
audiences, and is a trademark of Baggage Productions
<http://www.baggageproductions.com>. Undomesticated is no exception.
