If I remember Joe's photos, his seemed to have a "leg" extending outward from both sides of the 180 degree arc.The one in Tim's photo seem to have only one leg.In any case, I agree - it looks like it was meant to be a vertical vise - with those holes around the arc being for indexing common angles
