Hi Listers,
I'm looking to buy a genealogy program that is relatively easy to use
but powerful at the same time. I've read many good reviews on Legacy
and had a question that I didn't see answered in the FAQ.
My data is currently in TMG. My wife does not want to deal with its
learning
I've just started using the GeoLocation Database. Because I want to put
separate UK countries in the Country field, the database shifts the county
up into State/Province. Result, all my UK entries have a blank county,
giving e.g.
Pickering, , Yorkshire, England. and Durness, , Sutherland,

What annoys me is that you look up a UK location and it gives the town,
nothing under County and then puts the County under State/Province.
I can see the point of trying to make every country fit with the US
standard of 4 fields, but for UK
Mary,
Correct. Which is why I only use it for checking locations. As I have said
before and Jenny mentions in another email it is not really suitable for UK
addresses.

Debbie - you hit right on the head. And from what I am gathering, there is
no other choice but to have the same information print twice - just as you

It is time consuming to remove everything under the children's section, but
I that's what I'm doing at the moment.
Thanks for being so
Hi Mary, with the individuals screen up click the Show Master Location List

Hi Jenny and all,
When I searched my database for Birkenhead (City), Cheshire (County),
England (State/Province), United Kingdom (Country) it was found in my

don't know why you are having trouble.
I never have had the problems

Actually you need to choose comma as the delimiter and the quotes as the
text identifier. It works perfectly then. Even easier, after you save
the file from Legacy, rename the file
Ruth,
I would like to advise that this is a standard way of writing descendant
reports. I have seen many written using different software and all adopt
this layout (or very similar) and to be honest I'd rather have it this way.
This is probably why I didn't fully get your meaning in the first
Mary,
I should have mentioned that if you go to SearchSearch and Replace, select
Location Lists and enter , , ( no inverted commas) with , it will
eliminate them. There would still be a problem with the locations which
start with a single or double comma however.

Ron,
You make some very good points here. I think I should reconsider and
continue using the information the way it is generated. My only concern was
the length of the report because the information was repeated twice, but
maybe size of the report shouldn't be my focus. Thanks for your
Dennis,
Yes, Legacy allows you to work in an environment such as this. When the
database is opened for a second time, you'll get a message warning you that
it appears that this family file is opened by another user It will
explain a couple of things. After clicking OK, you're free to work
Is there anyway to import sources from one file into another? I started a
new file and I am going to be using some of the same sources that are in
another file. I really don't want to have to hand enter all that info
again.

On the Family/Pedigree views, on the particular person, click the icon that
looks like a temple.
On the descendant views, you can customize what is displayed by clicking on
Options - Customize Columns. You can select a BEPSC column, or add
whichever one individually. (Same with the index view)
I can look at the descendants tab, and set the columns the way I wish. In
this case, I would like name, b d dates, and current address, formatted in
descendant order. When I select print, I get the descendant report with it's
various selections, but I see no way to print the exact file I want
*Starting* with a single or double comma isn't a problem - there is a Report
option to remove *leading* commas in locations.
The problem is redundant commas *within* locations. I now realise these
aren't confined to so-called UK locations but appear in many other
countries, e.g. Ypres, ,
Michele,
Go to the Master Source List, click on Options, Import Lists. You can
select to import all Master Sources or tagged only.

Mary,
What do you mean by adjusting the county listings? Louisiana and Alaska have

That's what I do - mainly because when creating Pedigree web pages,
there is no place to check to remove leading commas, but there is a
place to check to use short location names. So if you ever plan to
use Pedigree web pages, you might want to use this work around.
