Ok then, create a new dummy file and do the same thing to the test file and
see if the same thing happens.
Also export a gedcom of the data of your family file then import into
another new file and see if the problem has corrected itself.
Also, have you tried File Maintenance Check Repair yet?
Tracy,
Most of my file names use underscores and this is not a problem which I have
met with Passage Express. I will keep your observation in mind though.

Nancy,
Mine seems to be fine using V7, Source Writer on.
Which version of Legacy? If using V7 do you have Source Writer switched on? Was
the data created using Source Writer or is it an old style V6 Source? By
transparent do you mean empty - ie the data is not there?

To me it is well worth it. No more looking at miles and miles of census
microfilm. I still have to look at microfilm but no where near as much :)
Also, there are tons of great databases that will give you the info you need to
obtain the original documents.
An added note, in case y'all
It is expensive but I use it almost daily. You may hear from some others that
it's hard to cancel after 14 days, but if you jot down the 800 number that's on
the screen when you join there is no problem canceling. I did this about 6
times before I finally joined about 4 years ago.

I too subscribe to Ancestry.com and find it quite useful -- although I don't
use it every day.
A possible alternative is to check with your local library to see if they
subscribe to Ancestry Library Edition. It
provides library patrons access to a wide range of resources
The ability to view and copy actual census images makes the Ancestry
subscription worth it. Just consider the cost of traveling to libraries in
othere cities to vew and copy these records or the time involved in writing
for copies.

Michael,
I don¹t think you can do serious research without Ancestry anymore. If it
saves you one research trip, it will have saved you the cost of the
subscription. I understand that it is a large lump sum. I wonder if they
ever allow monthly subscriptions?

Since these are Government records, shouldn't we have the right to
search them straight from the Census, SS, and other areas rather than
pay a third party for the access? Just wondering if anyone knows how
this all came about.

Believe it or not, it is very simple (as long as you have a place to plug
the monitor in in the back of the computer). I am doing this with my laptop
and there is a printer plug in the back.
All you do it plug in the printer and then turn it on. The computer will
auto detect it. Then you
And if your local library upgrades its software and in so doing renders
home-users unable to use HeritageQuest and seems in no hurry to fix the
problem as is currently the case where I am it's nice to have Ancestry.

You can look at them for free at any library that has microfilm. The one
that kills me is the social security applications. I don't think we should
have to pay for those. They should be digitalized and on the internet for
free access. It costs something like $27 for one! I remember when
I have accessed census records from Heritage Quest thru my local library.
It's free. I think Ancestry.com has better search engine to search the
census. It's not as good on some of the censuses in Heritage Quest.

Hey Michele, you wouldn't have lived on Frederick Street in Hagerstown,
Maryland about 25 years ago? I knew a Lewis family who lived there and
they had a daughter named Michele.
If, that's fine... if so, small world. grin

Joseph,
Yes you can access these rrecords but they do not have them on line nor are
they indexed for searching. Ancestry did us all a great favor in providing
this information in such an easy format to search. I don't use it daily
anymore but when I first subcribed 4-5 years ago I did.

Joseph,
You can. All you have to do is go to one of the National Archives Regional
Offices- but the NA has a LOT less online than Ancestry.

Joseph,
You and others who think the government should provide all this information
to you for free aren't really thinking clealy. Even the Democrats in Denver
who believe the government should do everything for Americans from cradle to
grave haven't promised free up-to-date vital records on
You can search the free government census records on a microfilm reader at
the library ... you will have to do line by line searches of the hand
written census reports ... some are well written, some (most) are NOT.
What you are paying Ancestry for is the INDEXING they did of the census
Reports.
I have DRIVEN through Maryland a few times but that is it :)

Please explain something. If the setting up of a second monitor is off
topic even though Legacy apparently posted a tip on how to do it (before I
joined), then why is this thread on the pros and cons of Ancestry.com not off
topic? Shouldn't it be found on an Ancestry User
This used to happen to me, on my CPU. I never discovered the reason, but found
that a reboot of the computer seemed to fix it. Not a GOOD answer, but at least
a 'work-around'.
