Double dating only applies for dates after 1582. That was when the
Gregorian Calendar was first introduced.

But only in Europe! England Wales changed in 1752 (and thus USA/Canada).
Scotland even later. Russia never has!

Legacy
There are other times when the year is one of two, such as regnal years.
To enter 15 March 1806-1807, be sure to enter the full years - 1086-1087.
Using 1086/87 will not work unless the within the double-dating period.
