Hi Brian

I have a location in the Master Location list called "At Sea". I do not put a
Lat or Long value so Legacy doesn't try to map a location. I did at one time
try different locations like, Atlantic Ocean etc, but found it better to just
record a birth or death and burial "At Sea". In many instances I haven't put a
burial date, but it would usually have been within hours of the death.

I add any information in the notes section of any of the events. If I know the
ship's name, I enter that as a note, eg "Born on board the Fritz Reuter"

I certainly would not put the location as the last port of embarkation or the
first port of entry. I agree the death and birth are registered by the captain
at the port of entry, but if I actually get the record, it will tell the time
and latitude and longitude of the event. I enter that in the notes. Eg
"Born 10.30 pm 9 Feb 1879 at sea on the ship Charles Dickens at Lat 42º 16' S
Long 149º 14' E
[This location is off the east coast of Tasmania, in the Tasman Sea]"

Subject: [LegacyUG] Buried at Sea

How do you handle the entry of a death location for someone that was buried at
sea?

I’ve been getting 3 different answers, each one seems to have its own merits:
1. Simply entered as “Buried at sea” (or sometimes more specific as “Buried in
Atlantic Ocean, or Buried in South Pacific Ocean, etc)
2. Death location is last known port of embarkation
3. Death location is first known port of entry of the vessel as the captain
must file a death notice with the local officials. Death records are on file at
that location.

Methods 2 and 3 would seem to apply more to passengers while method 1 would
seem to apply more to military personnel. Just wondering how other people
handle this one.
