I've not heard of the Index View being slow to load. It's basically
instant for me. I use it all the time.
How big is your file? Is it slow every time?
How much RAM does your computer have?
It is known that some people have a problem with the Name List opening

Ian,
If your Ancestor Colours only go back 4 generations it is time you
reset them. Tools > Ancestor Colours.
Like Set Relationships and Set Direct Line, you need to refresh after
adding more generations.
Set Direct Line is not such as issue as it is setting the preferred

June,
Ancestor Colours are just that. Colours applied to your direct
ancestors. Your father has a colour because he is our ancestor, his
brother does not because, although he is related to you (Uncle) he is
not an ancestor.

Gwen,
The way Legacy interprets numeric dates like 4 10 1942 is based on your
Windows settings for dates. You seem to have our Windows dates set to
mm, dd, so 4 10 1942 is interpreted as Apr 10 1942. If you want 4
10 1942 to be read as 4 Oct you need to change your windows date setting
Hi Jennie
I went there before I posted.
I have just changed my setting to what you mentioned and the dates now read
Aug 12, 1920 for example
I need them to read
12 Aug 1920
I was able to do this before. Have been using this program for many many
years and this is the first time
I have had this
HI Gwen,
Have you checked your date format ( Customize - Dates The Date settings are
reached by choosing *Customize *from the *Options * tab on
the *Ribbon
* bar and then clicking on the *Dates* option on the menu panel)
and the first option?

Hi everyone
I am not sure if I am doing this wrong or not.
In the past I was able to enter a date in an easy form if the date was 4
Oct 1942
I would enter 4 10 1942 and this would be filled in correctly in the date
field on my main individual view.
Today I have found I can no longer do this if I
Thank you Ian and Joyce, and Ian thank you for the hint in the last paragraph.
Will check that one out.

Ancestor Colours only go back 4 generations – which is not far enough back, and
with the latest update the option to “include married names” in the index only
sticks for the current open session.
I have to remember to turn the option on every time I open Legacy and want to
use the index!
Well after just letting the blank screen look back at me, it finally loaded
after about 15 minutes. That option is still OK, but I really prefer using
the "name list' because it gives me more details about each person I click
on than just using the "index" option. Is there a fix for the loading
let it sit for a bit, I clicked Index and nothing but about 5 minutes
later it was all there.

When I click on "Index" I cannot make it work. I have nothing but a blank
screen. If I type in a surname, nothing happens and the screen is blank
except for what I just typed in. It does not matter which category I put
data into, I still have a blank screen with nothing happening.
Thank
OK Nix that last problem with the index being empty. It just takes
forever to fill.
Looks interesting, I am contemplating possibilities.
Thanks

I just get an empty list from the index tab. Is there a switch?

On the index, Ancestor Colors are only on Direct Ancestors, unless I'm
mistaken

Thank you for the index thread. It has taught me something that is going to be
very useful.
What it made me question was the ancestral colours. I have set them up on the
Family screen and they are correct on my immediate ancestors (grandparents,
great grandparents etc) but seeing the index and
There's been so much talk about it that I just checked and both my index page
and the Name List are working perfectly. I use the Name List all the time.

The Index tab is what people are talking about. It is like the View >

On my copy of Legacy 9, there is a number of tabs: 1. Legacy Home; Family;
Descendant; Chronology; And finally, *Index*! Like I said before, I use the
Index tab everyday.

Where is the "index"? If you are talking about the Index tab on every
family group sheet, mine is all blank and if I put a name in, it does
nothing.

Hi Margaret
Why not use the ‘INDEX’ it is much, much, quicker. My names list is always very
slow to compile.

When I updated to the latest update, it is slow to bring up the list of
names when I click on "Name List". It shows all the alphabet for the list
of names and then the section where the detail etc is - all in little empty
boxes as it runs across my screen while it loads. I have done a check and
