Re: [LegacyUG] Facebook or mailing list

2017-09-27 Thread DonnaMcR
And on this mailing list I feel I can grouse a little bit if I need to. I
realize the FB group is restricted to members only, but it is still more
public. I don’t want to criticize Legacy in public, as it has been a wonderful
program for me, and I don’t want non-users to misunderstand. The mailing list
is more “in the family.”

The problem with Facebook as a platform for user group support is that there is
no real archive.

I answered a question I had about Legacy the other day using an archived email
message from about 3 years ago.

Facebook is designed to focus on the most recent activity only. It is hopeless
as an archive.

[LegacyUG] How do I see a sample MyHeritage individual's website

2017-09-14 Thread DonnaMcR
MyHeritage says it offers all these perks to set up a nice family genealogy
website. Can anyone give me a link so I can see some samples of these sites?

Also, when someone syncs with your website, do they automatically take all the
information you’ve posted?

I still am not clear how MyHeritage enhances research more than Ancestry. I
looked in their catalog and didn’t come up with much for me, except some
censuses, which I already have.

Thanks---

[LegacyUG] Dividing events on website

2017-09-12 Thread DonnaMcR
Hi---

I’m interested in putting a little more division between life events that show
on my website. Now, they pretty much all run together in a column with only a
very small dot to divide them.

When creating the website, I did choose the “number events,” but it does not
work. It still comes up with dots instead of numbers, as if I had checked the
other selection.

Is this a bug in the program? I am using the newest version. Advice please.

I really wish we had a selection of buttons or lines to choose from to separate
events. My events for one person may easily fit a whole screen.

Donna,

GedSite shows citations and sources if they are present in the GEDCOM file.

John, does Gedsite automatically show your sources, or do you have to enter
that manually?

Thanks

Donna

Re: [LegacyUG] Future of Legacy Private Website Creator

2017-09-06 Thread DonnaMcR
I have had my website (created with the Legacy software and hosted by GoDaddy)
for many years. I get responses, questions, and comments literally all the
time. Collaboration takes place by e-mail.

I get good response on Google searches, meaning I run into my own research all
the time. It’s hard for me to do a search on one of my ancestors without
running into myself. But that means the website is visible and helpful to
other researchers, which is my goal.I also run into my research that has
been copied and just pasted into trees on Ancestry, etc., all the time, which
is a frustration. (I am talking about personal narratives, not just facts or
straight transcriptions.) But that is another topic.

I have the great majority of my family research uploaded to it, so it deals not
only with main ancestral lines, but also the lines of in-laws, etc. I like
the Legacy setup because it allows me to show the sources of my research, with
the documentation appearing as footnotes that are in a classic format and are
useful to the viewer. It allows me to give credit to others for the
information they have provided to me, as well as providing the usual source
locations of information.

I only include those born before 1900.

Donna

Hi how do you use the GoDaddy site? For your personal use? Do you get
responses from other viewers that helps with your genealogy? Does it allow for
collaboration? Thanks!

As I understand it, Legacy software will continue to be a standalone desktop

I have been with Legacy practically since its inception. Besides using
Legacy for recording research and writing reports, I use Legacy to create my
own website, which I then upload to GoDaddy, a regular non-genealogy related
web host. This gives me complete flexibility in the creation and ownership of
my website.

Since MyHeritage pushes family trees on its own site, will Legacy continue to
give us the capability of creating a genealogy website of our own with the
Legacy software?

Is Legacy the only genealogy software that allows you to create your website
independently and then upload it to a regular non-genealogy related host?

  Any thoughts on this?

Re: [LegacyUG] Tagging for Family Group Webpages

2017-08-09 Thread DonnaMcR
Yes, I meant to include only individuals born BEFORE 1900. Thanks, Ronald, for
the correction.

Okay, I think I have solved the problem by creating a Focus Group of
individuals with Tag 1. From the new family file that is the Focus Group, I
was able to create Family Group webpages with only individuals born before 1900.

I still think, however, that creating Family Group webpages from Tag 1 should
have worked.

I am happy to be able to create webpages with Legacy, but I would like the
webpages to be more attractive. Since MyHeritage is a system of family trees,
however, I doubt that Legacy will be developing that aspect.

Donna

Don’t you mean that you only want to include people born before 1900?
