Re: Leo proposed logo and icon design

2016-11-13 Thread john lunzer
Ahh, I see. Thank you for the clarification. I agree with you assessment.

I realize my previous email was overly inflammatory. Let me restate a
couple of points. Leo does have a brand, but it is underdeveloped. Does it
need developing? Absolutely. My first impression with Leo was its icon and
I said to myself, "wow, a stock image!". It seems like an afterthought,
which is not a good first impression. The lion has great potential for a
strong logo. It would benefit the Leo community to develop it further.

As a disclaimer I would say, this is not an issue that should slow down
main developers. However I would hope that the main developers see the need
to improve Leo's branding, acknowledging that there are higher priority
concerns.

John,

Have you read my last response in this thread? The logo is not unique,
(as the current one) and can be obtained from svg downloading sites. If
we're going to change the current logo, we could search for one that
identifies the community and Leo in a non-generic way.

I will counter Edward's argument. First, Leo does not really have a
"brand" at this point, it has a small following. Leo's current
following isn't going to somehow be misled or confused by this new
logo. Second, Leo's current icon lacks professionalism and pride, if
only for the fact that it contains a watermark.

The new logo also bears resemblance to the old logo, which reduces any
jolting response.

I will speak only for myself but I also direct this towards Edward.
The proposed logo is superior to the current logo a great many
respects and inferior in almost none. A member of your community has
brought it to you and offered it up as "ours" rather than a "stock"
image.

It would be short sighted not to at least poll the current user
community to try to get a feel for what people think.

Thank you Amine for your work, I do hope it is recognized and adopted.

Amine, the proposed logo is beautiful. It's crisp and geometrically
striking, this is a "strong" and "proud" lion. This represents most of what
you would want in a logo.

I will counter Edward's argument. First, Leo does not really have a "brand"
at this point, it has a small following. Leo's current following isn't
going to somehow be misled or confused by this new logo. Second, Leo's
current icon lacks professionalism and pride, if only for the fact that it
contains a watermark.

The new logo also bears resemblance to the old logo, which reduces any

I appreciate the work you have done with the Logo, but I am not
interested in changing it. The existing Logo, such as it is, is part
of Leo's "brand" by now.

For me, there is a problem with a "brand" image when is generic enough
that can not be associated with something specific. This is what
searching for Leo current lion gives us [1] (sorry, links are kind of
big). The new proposed lion gives more unique results, but not unique
enough (see [2] & [3]). So, it doesn't make much sense to change a
"generic" tribal lion for another generic one, unless it brings some
real "brand" recognition to the project. If the community or its leaders
are not interested in such pursuit and the extra work of looking for
something that is unique and protected, we should keep the tribal lion
we have now.
