I built a customized (somewhat stripped, then other things added) LFS
back in April, 2009. It's based on the 6.3 LFS live CD with packages
updated to the 6.4 book (current at the time).
The LFS live CD is a very good starting point. I haven't explored
other (even more stripped) alternatives
