Vendor Specific SMART Attributes with Thresholds:
ID# ATTRIBUTE_NAME          FLAG     VALUE WORST THRESH TYPE
 UPDATED  WHEN_FAILED RAW_VALUE
  1 Raw_Read_Error_Rate     0x000b   100   100   025    Pre-fail
 Always       -       274871
  3 Spin_Up_Time            0x0027   100   099   025    Pre-fail
 Always       -       64
  4 Start_Stop_Count        0x0032   100   100   000    Old_age
 Always       -       1645
  5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct   0x0033   100   001   050    Pre-fail
 Always   In_the_past 0

I always find SMART data (specifically, the WORST and THRESHhold
columns) causes my head to spin. My impression is that 'Worst'
counts down, and I think the RAW_VALUE column (the last one) is
the first place to look (zero in this case).

Typically, I only usually look at the temperature (#194) from day
to day - provided the self-test reports PASSED.

ISTR that the absence of an Error Log is a common feature with
old disks.

  The
usual cause for this is missing perl. Do ls -l /usr/bin/perl and perl
 -V.

Jonathan,

also check that you created all of the symlinks in 6.6.

I'm starting to think the solution is to get a new hard disk, so that
these errors disappear.

Now that I have smartctl to monitor the hard drives (thanks Mike) I'm
going to run it until it dies. I don't have to worry much as this isn't
a production machine. I'll be sure to make frequent backups. I've found
a few sites that give insight into the SMART data, and Ken it starting
to give me a headache now. Thanks for the insight folks.
