Here's the relevant part of strace. Unfortunately strace -f hangs
waiting for something, so this is just the top level strace.

This problem happens with lftp 4.0.2, the Lucid default,
version 4.0.6 from Ubuntu 10.10, and self-compiled

This problem does not occur with 3.7.14 on Ubuntu 8.10
