James,
Just to give you a chance to clarify:
Were the names of people attending the conference from the ISC side
passed on to USAID?
If names of local activists weren't handed to USAID, does OpenITP plan
to retain that list and if so, for what

The demand for _real_ names in Tunis was not related specifically to the
Cryptoparty, but rather to the OpenITP event afaik?

How did they enforce this? Did they simply ask for legal names on a
signup-page, or did they require everyone to present a government-issued
ID for entry?

Hi,
Can anyone from OpenITP please explain to me how it is acceptable to force
everyone to show ID at a CryptoParty? I am *extremely* disturbed by this
news, especially regarding USAID funding of OpenITP's event and regarding
the notion that this was occurring in Tunisia.

The ideals of Cryptoparty include the protection of personal privacy.
This is why this situation is so worrying.

Hang on, no states.
Wait until someone who organised the Cryptoparty/OpenITP conference
answers these questions?

This is a U.S. government-sponsored event occurring in a country where
activists were recently responsible for the overthrow of a despotic regime.
These activists are vested in protecting their identity and personal

My concern is that USAID may have coerced an OpenITP activist training
event in order to gather personal information on Tunisian activists who
recently were responsible for overthrowing a Middle Eastern government.
How can this claim be falsified?

First off, why all this flame-throwing, Nadim? Can you give the folks at
OpenITP and ISC the benefit of the doubt and maybe ask, rather than always
accuse and suspect bad intentions? Rubs a lot of people the wrong way,
including me, since in the end, we are all in this together, n'est-ce pas?
Hi Katrin,
I don't mean to engage in flame-throwing. I am trying to underline that a
serious breach of proper security and privacy procedure was made at this
Cryptoparty event. No matter the intentions, whether they are good or bad, this
breach has occurred and as a result, Tunisian activists
Hi Nadim Katrin,
I had very little to do with this event and did not attend, however it
is my understanding that USAID required identification of unknown
attendees for the security of the Syrian activists involved, not the
Tunisians, due primarily to a prior event where there was an

Hey all,
Some of you know me. For those of you who don't, I'm James Vasile, and
at OpenITP the buck stops with me. So whatever your complaints about
our work in Tunis, I'm the right person to yell at.
First of all, everybody on the OpenITP team agreed that the real names
policy was terrible.
You may be aware that a previous event called CryptoParty was
organized during the OpenITP Tech Summit on 27th November.
However, the organizers required people to give their real ID in
order to participate, requirement that was considered as not
acceptable by a number of people, including

Dear all,
With quite a short delay (sorry for that!) we're kicking off a
CryptoParty tomorrow in Tunis. It will be held at the Engineering School
ENSI (National School of Computer Sciences), and will start at 2PM.
People will first meet in the main theatre.

Nice to see libtech folks going to my alma mater :)
I find this plan in the school website http://www.ensi.rnu.tn/fr/contact.php#
it is the building with the strange shape . And if it is in the main theatre as
indicated in cryptoparty page , it should just be in your left after the
entrance .
