Surely we want to avoid stepping into such a minefield.

Whatever we do it's going to be a minefield. After all how do we
classify dictionaries? But as far as I'm aware, dictionaries are coded
like en_US, en_GB, es_ES, es_AR sort of thing. The best thing would be
to offer all dictionaries where the country code matches.

And if there are problems like you suggest, then there are two obvious
replies:

If the complaint is but my language (eg ga_GB for gaelic) isn't there,
the response is well, add it then. And if the complaint is but this
language (eg ur_FJ for Fijian urdu) is offensive / shouldn't be there,
then the answer is LO is a Free Software project. You are trying to
deny other people their freedom to speak their own language. I know
that might not go down well, but it's a very good Free response, and
should be accepted by anybody who understands our philosophy.

(What we do if the complaint is but there are too many minor
languages, I don't know! :-) That's the clutter thing again)

The issue is: how to code an installer which does that clearly and with

So I restate one of my questions : what is the tool used to code the

Which is exactly what the user can do in a custom installation.

So I restate one of my questions : what is the tool used to code the
 installer ?

A bunch of source data files in scp2 (used on all platforms), a pile of Perl
run from solenv/bin/make_installer.pl, a number of template .idt files for
Windows Installer, which are then mangled by the Perl code and produces stuff
fed to Windows Installer tools like msidb, ending up with a .msi file, one or
several .cab files, and optionally a number of .mst files.

Then there is a setup.exe which is plain C++ code which is a small program that
just runs msiexec on the .msi file, telling it which installer UI localisation
to use.

And finally all this can optionally be wrapped by NSIS into a single executable
file installer like the ones that we offer.

Re: [Libreoffice] over-long extensions manager list ...

2011-02-02 Thread plino

If I may contribute with my 2cents why not use the best ideas already on the
field?

The perfect installer IMHO should start with a simple box to select the
language used by the installer itself (where the detected locale is
suggested)

An example is the first screen for the FLOSS Abiword
http://www.abisource.com/

http://nabble.documentfoundation.org/file/n2404563/Select_language.png

This variable (user confirmed) can be used from this step forward in the
installer dialogs and inclusively to select the language of the GNU
agreement and obviously for selecting the GUI and dictionaries to be
installed.

But better yet on the next step use the best solution already provided also
by Abiword

The components are selected according to the type of install but the user
can see what is selected and add/remove any component on the same screen
(please notice that all the text in this installation step is already
displayed in the language selected on the first step, I just switched to
English for this example)

http://nabble.documentfoundation.org/file/n2404563/components.png

Finally the cherry on the top of the cake: in addition to the included
dictionaries (English is included as default but others can probably be
added) you have an option to download other dictionaries during installation
(although you can also add them on the fly at any time after installation)

http://nabble.documentfoundation.org/file/n2404563/dictionaries.png

I think this is the best installer possible.

Bit more work, but can we provide two installers?

Installer (a) is a tiny download that then pulls everything it needs
from the net.

Installer (b) is a kitchen sink installer that contains everything.

I've built a couple of SuSE systems recently, and they use that
principle - a net install CD that's a couple of hundred meg, or an
offline install that's a full 4.7Gb DVD.

That way we satisfy both camps, and also nobody gets any nasty surprises
- as always it's the principle of least shock...

But some lines later settings.mk is included (which is
 solenv/inc/settings.mk)

 .INCLUDE : settings.mk

In this file CDEFS is reset. So VBA_OOBUILD_HACK doesn't get defined for
sc/source/ui/vba. Is this intended or a bug?

based on the other 2 uses of VBA_OOBUILD_HACK, I'd imagine that the

I found some info on the openoffice.org wiki. The next hurdle seems to
be getting the MS SDK. I'm d/l the win7 version as its smaller and
hopefully okay but it is looking like it will take all night.

I might have this working in a couple of weeks at this rate.

Also, I noticed some oddities.

checking size of long... 0!!

config kept picking up /usr/bin/csc.exe which seems to be some kind of
scheme interpreter. I just pulled in all the cygwin dev tools so I
guess I ended up with it. I renamed the file something else and it is
now picking up the DotNet version.

It also appears that when using VCExpress that ATL and COM is out so
some features will go missing, presumably.

I agree : for very old closed formats, LibO should have only import filters.

Removing save support for MSWord 6/'95 disturbs me somewhat, being able
to save as that old .doc format is handy for me to perturb MSOffice to
flush out problems in those binary formats. Maybe I'm just emotionally
attached to it to see it removed.

I take the point about people saving as 6/95 because they want a
something that will definitely work in MSOffice, what about just
rearranging the save format list so that it appears way down at the
bottom or something.

No chance it's used to support writing some of the binary file formats
 out uniformly across different endians?

Nope. OOo/LibreOffice has its own stuff for all such things, since very long
times. The configure script is a relatively late addition to OOo/LibreOffice.

Anyway, I noticed that SIZEOF_LONG and WORDS_BIGENDIAN are checked in
set_soenv.in to for some rare platforms (MIPS, PowerPC, S390x), so I will not
remove them from configure.in. I will just bypass the failing tests on Windows,
and hardcode the correct values (even if not needed as such on Windows).

Re: [Libreoffice] [Patch] SVG export filter improvements

2011-02-02 Thread Thorsten Behrens
KUROSAWA, Takeshi wrote:
Here are some patches to improve SVG export filter.

Hi Takeshi,

wow, this is great work! I have only one comment (and a suggestion,
see below):

0003: Make filter export linear and axial gradients as SVG linearGradients.
Use SVG's native gradient instead of polygon fallback.
With this patch, gradient steps of linear and axial gradient are ignored.
In other words, linear and axial gradients are always exported as
 smooth gradients.
However, as far as I know, the manual steps function is for printing.
So I suppose ignoring gradient steps is safe.

Nope, this is still in use, especially in legacy binary documents
(soon to be axed I guess), and more importantly, for all those svm
metafiles. Could you keep both code paths - i.e. falling back to the
old code, should there be a step count (with 0 meaning smooth
gradient, and maybe you can even cut off at something like 100 or so
steps)?

I have not yet applied the patches, to not interfere with potential
rework on your side.

A bit orthogonal to this great improvement, let me point you to
https://github.com/knobo/OOo-svg-Export.git - this is an early stage
of a slightly different attempt, using the new drawing layer
primitives (that contain more high-level geometry information, like
stroking etc.). I attach two changes I had lying around locally -
maybe you're also interested in looking into that.

Additionally (though not sure it's of help here, as it's designed
for high-level ODF-style gradients) - there's
basegfx/inc/basegfx/tools/gradienttools.hxx, that encapsulates most
of the pain involved in converting gradient types.

To support native gradients, I need to calculate a bounding box of a gradient.
Currently it is done in OutputDevice::ImplDrawLinearGradient and
 OutputDevice::ImplDrawComplexGradient.
So I moved that to Gradient class (0002 patch) to use it in filter code.

This is fine.

0004: Make filter export transparencies as SVG masks.
SVG export filter supports only solid transparency of solid fill (i.e.
 color) until now.
The patch extends support to support solid and gradient transparency
 of all fill styles.
 # Some SVG viewers including WebKit don't support mask yet :-(.

I'd take that route anyway.

Cheers,

Re: [Libreoffice] Remove old Word 6.0/95 save as support

[ Should we remove export capabilities to old file formats? ]

The usability problem I've seen is that users:
  * want to save in MS Word format, but don't know what version to use
  * the pick 6.0 or 95 thinking many different things (lower number
means it will work with more computers?)
  * since this is there only copy of the file, they lose all tables
and more

I think you've made a good point. However, I don't think removing the
Save As support should be decided from a usability perspective, as I can
envision certain workflows that require interaction between older
versions of MS Word. I think the longer-term and better solution is to
rework the logic such that it's not a binary decision of Lose info? or
save in ODF format? See below ...

We currently have the same This document may contain formatting or
content that can not be saved in... message for if you are saving
to Word 97/2000/XP (very good at saving) or Word 6.0 (very bad at
saving).

This message and associated logic needs updating. Specifically, my
user's understanding is that if the file is not to be saved as an ODF
file (odt, ods, od, etc.), then LO shows that warning. This binary
thinking is indicative of a younger project, and I submit that this is
one area in which LO could show more prudence and maturity.

Instead -- and I don't know how possible this currently is -- I think we
should introspect the document and compare against the chosen file
format's capabilities to list specific features that will be lost.

-
You are attempting to save this document to a Word 6.0 format. Word
6.0 does not support this feature that this document uses:

* Tables

If you save in this file format, the parts of this document using this
feature will be lost.

[ Lose document pieces ] [ Choose alternate format ]

-

Showing specifically what would be lost would be much more helpful, only
bugs the user when appropriate, and does not wrongly presume in the
button text that ODF format is the only format capable.

I also do not think customizing this text to make it more
specific will help. Users have become trained by the interface to
ignore this message (this is a different usability issue, NOT a user
issue).

I do not agree unless updating the text is all that is on the table.
Specifically, if all the features in use that are supported by the file
format, then we should not display that dialog.

Hard to do, there *is* some ultra-basic and probably abandoned logging
stuff which could be converted to that, e.g. sw::log::Tracer, but it
would be a lot of effort to categorize and organize the filters to give
correct and useful results. And in a lot of cases actually implementing
the missing bits would be easier than logging the failure :-) in the
cases where the problem is not inherent in the capabilities of the
output/input format.

Perhaps tangentially (or not at all related), does anyone know if any of

[Libreoffice] [PATCH] Reworking build.pl: What to do with the --html and --interactive parameters

Wenn you kill the file in the module's build directory, you kill the
html page's show the log feature, as the individual module's log is
loaded by the master html-page.

build --html will create both the status-html (the progress bar as
well as putting the module's log intolocaloutput/misc/log (IIRC).
So it does that already. Or might be that I misundertsand completely.

I don't have strong feelings about having the actual html page or not.
When I started building, I used it quite a bit, but now I do automated
builds, so I don't sit and wait man, when it is finished :-)

Christian

Hi Christian

I made a deeper analysis of the build.pl. --html activates verbose mode
of dmake and deliver and --dontgraboutput calls a cat of a
generated log file. This seems to be the functionality you need. I've
now introduced a new parameter called --verbose which substitutes the
functionality of --html --dontgraboutput.

Could you please test --verbose in your environment to see if it works
as expected (after this patch is pushed :-). If the tests are
successful, I will remove all the unneeded parts. For backward
compatibility I will link the out-dated parameters to the new --verbose
param.

Thanks,
Michael

One of the virtues of OOo, and LibO, was the number of file formats that
it can read from, and write to.

Can that code be rewritten to Export As?
Alternatively, can that code be rewritten as a user-installable extension?

IOW, retain the ability of LibO to read/write those file formats. If the
only way to have that functionality is thru an extension, then so be it.
(Those file formats can join DAISY, Braille, and umpteen other file
formats that LibO can either read from, or write to, only by using a
user-installed extension.)

We can't say LibreOffice is MPL, because large chunks of it aren't.

I think jonathon-4's suggestion is brilliant!

Keep the currently used formats in the Save As (sorted please!) dialog and
old cryptic formats in a Export to option. This way no formats are lost but
functionality is increased.

Ah crap, missed this mail - put it into solenv/bin, too, will clean
that up momentarily -

meanwhile, added unit tests to all dictionary subdirs that have
thesauri files (commented out for the handful of broken .dat files),
so going forward, errors detected by th_check.pl will break the

If someone fixes one of the offending .dat files, please remind one

I used listLink instead of listLink* because 1) the elements of the

Looks good. Pushed.

I recognize this comment was in gest, but thought I'd chime in with a
tidbit. I believe that Intel removed HTT after the Pentium 4 chip. Of
note, as well, is that hyperthreading (HTT) is not as universal an
upgrade as true multi-core chips. In fact, the general practice in the
High Performance Computing (HPC) community is to turn off hyperthreading
because it degrades performance for most workloads.

A further note is that there is some skepticism as to the security of
HTT, in terms of side-channel monitoring of in-core process data.

Actually, now that I just wrote the above, I seem to recall a discussion
of HTT technology in the Nehalem chip. When I have time, I might
research that ...

[Libreoffice] Recording changes: Deleted lines 'misbehaving'.

2011-02-02 Thread Andy Hearn
All,

Here's another issue affecting collaborative authors.

(FWIW: I'm on master branch, pulled today, around 1900GMT)

SW: when an author deletes an existing body of text whilst 'Record Changes'
is running, the strike-through'ed text soon disintegrates, leaving swathes
of meaningless long lines. And, if the deleted sentence continues to an
end of a paragraph, the entire text plus strike-through disappears, leaving
a small vertical bar at the LHS as the remaining indicator.

Reproducing:

1. New odt. Fill a page of text, say four or five paragraphs.
2. Start recording changes (enable 'Show' changes too).
3. Delete, I use highlight + del key, a number of words, sentences, and at
least the last sentence of a paragraph.
4. Watch the strike-throughs while hovering mouse cursor over them - the
bubble 'erases' text. Sometimes the text disappear on their 'own accord'
after a while.
5. Hit Ctrl-S. Some strike-thoughs disappear completely.

Also, loading a .doc with recorded changes on MSWord shows same behaviour
for deleted text. Inserted text appear to be unaffected.

This behaviour cannot be replicated on OOo, nor MSWord.

Is anyone already aware of this, or is working on/with Recording Changes?
If not, then I want to dive in.

Cheers
Andy

I am just integrating that, fixing few minor things there (we should not
do 'use namespace' in the headers); but looks great overall! I hope
I'll be able to push later tonight.

I've reviewed your patches, and have them building in my local tree.
I'll do few tests tomorrow, and push :-)

Wrt. the 'using namespace', I fixed those only in the sax header, but
left the private headers (like LibXSLTTransformer.hxx) as they are. I
also named your implementation of odfflatxml to OdfFlatXml.cxx, and
removed a bit more in scp2. Please have a look at the git history when
I push this, I hope I did not break your intentions too much ;-)

Thank you a lot,
Kendy

Re: [Libreoffice] [PATCH] [PUSHED] Removed unused functions in calc 2

 Hi,

Please find attached second patch (made available under LGPLv3+/MPL) removing
unused functions in calc (based on call-catcher list).
Patch has been rebased with origin/master and compiled before submission.

Thanks. Applied. Some of those methods were mine, and I'm surprised
how they got unused over time.

I skipped segmenttree.hxx and segmenttree.cxx however; since those
methods you removed tend to get added, removed, added, ... quite
frequently. I plan to re-work the API of those classes probably during
the 3.4 cycle, so it's okay to skip those files for now.

Regards,

Kohei

Re: [Libreoffice] Should the Thesaurus/mythes use a precomputed index (installer file size)

2011-02-02 Thread Steven Butler
Hurray,

I have finally got past bootstrap phase and I'm leaving it build in
the background today while I'm at work.

I had a number of small issues that I had to resolve, including being
unable to execute some of the installers that were downloaded. A
chmod 755 src/*.exe src/*.EXE seemed to resolve that, but a couple of
other issues too.

I will send an update tonight if all goes well.

It seems to have failed building VCL - there is an error stating
f268: Error: The image(s) check ... could not be found. (my elision
as different PC)

Could this have something to do with removing icons that was done
recently? I may have to wait till tonight and try to update the git
checkout(s) to see if that helps.

I also had errors building in a number of other subprojects that I'll
need to look into tonight.

Re: [Libreoffice] [Fwd: [PATCH] new De-Java-ised flat XML export]

2011-02-02 Thread David Tardon
Hi, Peter,

 +/*
+ * FLABridge provides some obscure attribute mangling to wordml2000
 import/export filters.
+ * In the long run, you might want to replace this with an XSLT
 extension function.
 + */
 +class FLABridge : public WeakImplHelper1 DocumentHandlerAdapter
 +{

FLA is a way to avoid doing heavy arithmetic computations of attribute
values directly in XSLT; instead, the arithmetic expression is emitted
to output as FLA expression and suffix '.value' is added to the name of
the attribute, so it can be recognised and evaluated by the FLABridge
(where the suffix is removed again). It is mainly used in
filter/source/xslt/import/wordml/wordml2ooo_props.xsl, but at a few
other places too.

So much for theory. In practice, the syntax of FLA is so horrible that
XLST is the essence of clarity in comparison .-) E.g., look at the
following snippet from
filter/source/xslt/import/wordml/wordml2ooo_props.xsl and description of
the FLA syntax in filter/source/xsltfilter/fla.cxx and tell what the
expression in 'select' does .-)

xsl:attribute name=fo:margin-top.value
   xsl:value-of
   select=concat('(.(twips2cm(?[',name(w:hdr),'](?(=($0[',w:pgMa

r/@w:top,'])($1(|[',w:pgMar/@w:header,'][720])))($1)($0))[',w:pgMar/@w:top,']))
   [cm])')/
/xsl:attribute

IMHO all these FLA computations should be rewritten to XSLT and the
FLABridge abolished. Maybe you'd want to attempt that? :-)
