Checking the above for consistency I see the "corrupt" backtrace is due to
passing gdb the wrong binary.
Repeating it, more carefully

I can reproduce a hang on an RHEL7 box.
Are the following gdb backtraces in nay way helpful? The last one looks
corrupt.
What else do you need to trace this?
