Apparently I made this request so long ago I forgot it existed, and yes it
obviously seems to have been ignored.
I don't like the idea of using thunderbird as a work around, it's not my MUA of
choice

As Workaround you can use the function datasource from thunderbird.
Thunderbird can use Caldav and Carddav. So you can use it indirectly.

I just want to second this. CardDAV is *the* open standard for contacts
exchange. Libreoffice should definitely support it as an address book source.

I would like to have carddav as an addressbook source in LibreOffice too.
Using Evolution is not a good way, e.g. because Evolution is only available for
