I've installed from the Ubuntu 4.3.X ppa which gives me 4.3.1.2 (not 4.3.2.2)
and I still can't see the text.
Ubuntu 14.04 64bit under VirtualBox LO 4.3.1.2.

I tried to toggle h/w acceleration, anti-aliasing but I still can't see the
text. I also have this issue on a server when using LO in headless mode.

Have you tried playing with LO setting ? Especially "View" (toggle h/w
acceleration, anti-aliasing, etc).
I found that Impress in Ubuntu 'sensitive' to those settings, different results
