What happens is that the process/thread gets SIGSEGV, the JVM catches that and raises exception NullPointerException. The Java code can then cleanly catch the exception, handle the error condition and continue with no problem. You have to wait until it actually crashes :) When running LibreOffice under GDB with some Java thread, I do: handle SIGSEGV pass noprint nostop to stop gdb from giving me many false positives (false alarm). It it hits a problematic (e.g. in C++ code) SIGSEGV / uncaught Java NullPointerException, it will abort and gdb should still cache that. Else, the JVM creates a file with a backtrace that can give hints. I have *many* files with this problem (i.e. missing pictures). If I print the file, everything is OK. If saved as PDF, everything is OK. Page preview is *not* OK, the pictures are invisible. When I right-click the invisible picture (Picture.../[Picture]), the picture is displayed in the dialog. Tested with Version 4.0.0.0.alpha1+ (Build ID: ac4d26e3fc2728ee80f33a485540d50b48927dd), 2012.12.03 under Windows XP and Vista 64. It works with LibO 3.6.3. I agree with other reporters here that this level of arrogance is a bit disturbing. Ho hum - the complaints:useful-work ratio is a bit disturbing here. It seems the problem is that modern capable PDF renderers can render the generated PDF acceptably; older and/or more broken ones have problems - AFAICs. This may well not be a bug in LibreOffice - the question is: can we do much about it - can we detect and generate PDF differently ? What is the difference in the PDF. Anyone wanting to complain would do better to dig through the PDF spec. and find a good way to pretty-print that PDF, and then work out which commands are different in it. I had a go using a recent xpdf-poplar; interestingly the raw X backend of this fails to render the PDF, but the cairo / SVG output renders it fine: as does the evince viewer. Typing the tab key in the source text area of the search and replace dialog (or in the Find toolbar) does not work, though it should. 2. Typing the yen key (used as backslash in Japanese computers) and t to compose the tab regex does not work, though it should. Background: I discovered this by pasting text from an excel chart which inserted tons of tabs. I was surprised I could not easily delete all tabs. Just typing a tab does not work! The background of #2 above is as follows. It has always been the case that on Japanese keyboards, the backslash symbol is replaced with a Yen mark symbol (Y with two lines through it). They are the same ASCII code and when you type a regex in perl for example, you are typing the yen key. The characters in question (this may not render correctly on your screen) are ¥ (yen) and \ (backslash). LibreOffice breaks this so that it is not possible to search for a tab or other regex using the backslash. It is also inexplicably impossible to search for a tab by typing a tab. (I finally was able to search for a regex by copying the backslash from the help window.) There is at least on the mac a little-known way (option + yen key) to create a backslash character, but nobody knows/understands backslash. On a MacBook Pro, the delete key is at the upper right below the eject key. To the left of the delete key is the Yen key. Shift-Yen gives a pipe symbol. Option-Yen gives a backslash (which I didn't know until today after owning it and programming for over three years). Therefore both the yen key + t and backslash + t should work as a regex, since different keyboards/computers may have a backslash key. Recommendation: A. Allow user to type a tab with the tab key and search for it. B. Interpret the half-width yen mark (I believe it is ascii 92) plus a regex symbol (n,t,s,r…) as a backslash. Additional enhancement recommendation: C. This kind of problem, i.e. searching for glyphs in other languages, or deep in the unicode tables, might be common problem. I have found a situation where values in specified columns are compared in a case-sensitive way, even though the columns are both declared as VARCHAR_IGNORECASE. The attached database (Case Sensitive Function.odb) contains the example. There are two tables: Text1 has a column Col1 with text values abcde, fghij, klmno, and pqrst; Text2 has a column Col2 with text values abcde, Fghij, klmnO, and pqRst. (Note that the first values match, while the other values differ in one capital letter.) Both Col1 and Col2 are declared as VARCHAR_IGNORECASE. Text1 has an additional column called Target. The SQL statement update Text1 T1 set Target=(select Col2 from Text2 T2 where T1.Col1=T2.Col2) works as expected: all of the rows from Col2 in Text2 are copied to Target, because the strings match in a case-insensitive comparison. But the SQL statement update Text1 T1 set Target=(select Col2 from Text2 T2 where left(T2.Col2,5)=T1.Col1) does not work correctly. Only the first row from Col2 is copied to Target, showing that something - presumably the left() function - caused a case-sensitive comparison to be done. Interestingly, the statement update Text1 T1 set Target=(select Col2 from Text2 T2 where T1.Col1=left(T2.Col2,5)) works as expected, copying all rows, so there is something significant about the order of the comparison. Perhaps this behavior of the left() function (and the right() function has the same quirk) is by design. My issue is that I need a way to force comparisons to be case-insensitive, and apparently specifying the column type isn't sufficient. To show the behavior: 1. Open the Case Sensitive Function.odb database. 2. Edit the two tables Text1 and Text2 to verify the column declarations. 3. Open each of the tables to verify the contents. Make sure that the Target column is empty. 4. From the Tools menu, choose SQL. Copy one of the SQL statements above into the Command field, then click Execute. When the statement executes correctly, click Close. 5. Open the Text1 table and inspect the Target column. If all four rows are filled, then the comparison was case-insensitive; if only the first row is filled, the comparison was case-sensitive. 6. Be sure to delete all values from Target before closing the table, in preparation for the next test. (Note: my installation of LibreOffice uses the default database, presumably HSQL. Unfortunately I have a critical problem. When I make a Table with Writer everything looks really nice and easy. But there is a real critical bug: If I cancel or add a new LINE the cells loose their formate. The table corrupts and does not any more sum the amounts correctly. In fact the total sum does not change anymore. Once again: the table corrupts when i add or cancel one or several lines. I conclude that the slowness of my LibreOffice can plausibly be attributed to configuration parameter --enable-dbgutil and the resulting use of debug version of STL iterators. I am setting bug status to NOTABUG. Some details, for those who might care ... (*) With master commit af3030e (2012-12-05), the program took 42 minutes to get as far as the dialog box Enable macros, and closing the document and the program took 1 hour and 17 minutes. (*) Looking at callgrind data from the first five hours or so of opening the file, I see ... - inclusive numbers for debug iterators add up to way more than the total cost. I do not know how to extract the inclusive cost of a set of functions (i.e., without double counting the cost of references within the set). - Looking just at the exclusive cost of the couple of hundred most expensive functions, I see debug STL functions account for 65% of all the cost to that point.
