I copied the original report paragraph by paragraph to a blank new writer
document suing mouse buttons 4/5 for copy/paste: no problem! Next attempt
always copy/paste 3 paragraphs together, 3 times all report, no problem.
Same good results with copy/paste from

That's something very special with this very special document. When I save
reporter's sample with 3.6.5 as .odt, close, reopen, save as .rtf, close and
then reopen with 4.0 the ugly backgrounds do not appear. So this might be a
combination of document problem and LibO problem. I reduce priority
I can't tell whether the font problem is related. Also more early versions do
not recognize Courier New correctly, but that now simply TNR is shown appears
with the same version for me as the background problem

There is NO way in forcing replication of the error. Highly interruptive and annoying working on even Calc 4.0 on uBuntu 12.04 LTS. Exactly same worksheet on Win8 Calc 3.2 works without interruption - suspect OS issue ??? Or maybe hanging 10 from Gnome the problem? Which shapes are visualized and which not is quite at random. If you click on the group they are showed for a second (with transparent colors). If you ungroup them, they are showed correctly. If you group them again they disappear again. The bug is quite reproducible. Attached you will find an ODG file that exhibits the flaw. NOTE: The file was originally created with OpenOffice, then opened and saved again with LibreOffice. But this should not be an issue. I tried it again with LO 4.0.0.3 running under Windows 8 pro. The bug is still
there.
With multiple lines I acctually meant fractions not newlines. Sorry for that. I
should have been more exact.
I attached a screenshot of writer showing the problem. Below the 1st and 3rd
formula the gap can be seen. The second formula is just for comparission.
1st formula: abs {{a+b} over {c+d}}
2nd formula: a+b
3rd formula: sqrt{{a+b} over {c}} + d
When you insert any character or space behind the formula the gap suddenly
disappears.
