[Libreoffice-bugs] [Bug 132568] New: FORMATTING, EDITING: define line styles for line drawings

2020-04-30 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=132568

Bug ID: 132568
Summary: FORMATTING, EDITING: define line styles for line
drawings
   Product: LibreOffice
   Version: 6.4.0.3 release
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: medium
 Component: Writer
  Assignee: libreoffice-bugs@lists.freedesktop.org
  Reporter: xvids...@crapmail.org

Description:
In LO writer there does not seem to to be any defaults for line colour, angle,
arrow, thickness.

new line reverts to blue colour with a standard thickness, 0 degree angle and
no arrows. free-form and straight line drawing is almost a necessity for
drawing lines between images and text across the page or on top of images and
when doing this regularly becomes cumbersome when having to edit all properties
of each line individually.

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Insert menu → Shape → Line → Line OR Freeform-Line (or other objects)
2.
3.

Actual Results:
new line reverts to blue colour with a standard thickness, 0 degree angle and
no arrows. free-form and straight line drawing is almost a necessity for
drawing lines between images and text across the page or on top of images and
when doing this regularly becomes cumbersome when having to edit all properties
of each line individually.

Expected Results:
* should be able to select line profiles / styles predefined by the user which
can apply a set of pre-defined attributes such as colour, thickness, angle, etc
to the surrently select line(s).

* ideally drawing new lines with a selected style would apply the style after
release of the mouse button.

* "line style" under right-click → Line → "Line style" tab should probably be
renamed from "line style", which is misleading to something more meaningful
such as "line continuity", since it is only limited to dot/dashes of lines and
their spacing.

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: Yes

OpenGL enabled: Yes

Additional Info:
Trying to apply a style / profile / set of attributes to new drawing objects
when selecting **Insert → Shape → Line → Line** menu. Pasting a line preserves
line attributes such as colour, dotted or dashed, arrows and angle, but when
drawing free-form lines it is easier to draw a new free-form line with the
mouse rather than manipulating individual points in order to mould the new free
form line around the new text.

In writer it appears that lines or drawing objects are not managed by a regular
style (F11) which you can simply apply to a frame or table but almost as if
drawings do not support this feature.

Free-form and straight lines always seem to revert back to some unknown setting
I cannot find. One can select *continuous* line "style" but not edit it in any
way and this still the line to blue.

One can define new "styles" under the *line style* tab whose options are
limited to whether the line is dotted or dashed and the length of those dashes.
I can get something close to a continous line by reducing the length/spacing
in the line tab, but it is dashed.

Tracing a line with the mouse results in a blue colour with a standard
thickness. These settings are easily changed via the **Document Object
Property toolbar** or **select line → right-click → Line...** context menu.
Due to the nature of mouse tracing a line it can be difficult to draw arrows at
right angles (eg, 0, 90, 270°) so have been resorting to copy and pasting
existing arrows, but when you are in the midst of writing and just want to
insert a shape with predefined attributes it tends to interrupt what you are
doing. ie, you have to go and find a suitable arrow on another page, select
it, (losing your place in the document), find your place back to where you were
working then paste it.

--
Some specific questions include:

To draw arrows with default settings applied how can one create some sort of a
'style' so that they all come out the same or to a various predefined defaults
without having to fiddle with angle, arrow head or colour for each line/arrow
created?

Is there a hotkey setting or easy way to change the angle from say 0° to 90°?

I can confirm this.

Here are my results:
1. I open the attached file with LibreOffice 7.0
2. I click-and-hold the image and drag it up 4 times. Every time
I drag the image up, I get more white-space below the image.
This can be seen in attachment:
  After3rdMove.png
3. When I click-and-hold the image and drag it up a 4th or 5th time
the image moves to the second page
(Sometimes this happens after the 4th time, other times after the 5th)
This can be seen in attachment:
  After4thMove.png
4. When I undo everything with ctl-Z the image doesn't go back.

If I start all over again, right-click the image and choose:
   Properties -> Anchor
I see that behind "Anchor" the selection "As character" was made.

Does that make a difference?

Dear Telesto,

To make sure we're focusing on the bugs that affect our users today,
LibreOffice QA is asking bug reporters and confirmers to retest open, confirmed
bugs which have not been touched for over a year.

There have been thousands of bug fixes and commits since anyone checked on this
bug report. During that time, it's possible that the bug has been fixed, or the
details of the problem have changed. We'd really appreciate your help in
getting confirmation that the bug is still present.

If you have time, please do the following:

Test to see if the bug is still present with the latest version of LibreOffice
from https://www.libreoffice.org/download/

Please DO NOT

Update the version field
Reply via email (please reply directly on the bug tracker)
Set the bug's Status field to RESOLVED - FIXED (this status has a particular
meaning that is not
appropriate in this case)

If you want to do more to help you can test to see if your issue is a
REGRESSION. To do so:
1. Download and install oldest version of LibreOffice (usually 3.3 unless your
bug pertains to a feature added after 3.3) from
https://downloadarchive.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/old/

2. Test your bug
3. Leave a comment with your results.
4a. If the bug was present with 3.3 - set version to 'inherited from OOo';

With LibreOffice 6.3 everything works as expected, even if I repeat the steps
several times. I noticed however, that Xisco is using 6.4, one version later.

That's why I decided to try LibreOffice 7.0 also. I right-click
   "Богородск санаторий экск (1).doc"
and when I choose
   Open With -> LibreOfficeDev 7.0
LibreOffice first opens, but then it instantly crashes. I don't get to see the
content of the document.

Telesto, which LibreOffice version were you using?

Then I did something extra. From the Linux/Debian start menu I selected
   Start -> Office -> LibreOfficeDev 7.0 Writer

When LibreOffice restarted, it reported that it had crashed and I choose to
recover the document and to send in an anonymous bug report. Then I do get to
see Telesto's document and I follow the next steps:

2. ctrl-A
3. ctrl-C
4. ctrl-N
5. ctrl-V
6. I repeat steps 4-5 five times (it doesn't crash)
7. I press ctrl-w , but I don't save (it doesn't crash)

This is:
   Attachment "Open5times.png"

Xisco, do you have the option to double-check this with LibreOffice 7.0?

PS: I'm not a developer. I submitted a few bugs/reports myself and I'm trying
to confirm the bugs that other people reported here.

I wondered if you faced an obstacle when trying to install a newer version.

If you like you can try a third option. If you start LibreOffice and click
Help, then do you have the option "check for updates"?
  Please check image "Libreoffice63-CheckForUpdates.png"

I suspect that you don't have that option, because in versions 6.3 and 7.0 it's
there, but in version 6.1 it's not. However, it doesn't hurt to try.

Did you try to go to:
  https://downloadarchive.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/old/6.1.5.2/
and download and install a newer version from there?

With some luck you get version 6.1 next to 6.0. That's pretty much what I get
if I go there and install a newer version. Please check image
   "LXDEandLibreOfficeVersions.png"

For Ubuntu you probably need the "deb" package. After you choose either x86 (32
bit) or x86_64 (64 bit) you download the file that you see on top (the one
that's respectively 198 MB or 218 MB) and install it.

Maybe this is also a solution for your 12 years old daughter with a 32 bit
Ubuntu?

(In reply to Ulf Zibis from comment #12)
> Even in your screen shot from 6.1 there is still a bug.
> The marked text (see my attachment) should be in the same frame box.

I saw that image, but I'm sorry. I don't know what your document should look
like, and it may be possible to correct that issue also with LibreOffice 6.1.
I'm only a volunteer here, spending a lot of time, trying to help you as best
as I can, but I don't have a magic wand.

Best of luck with it!

PS: There are many other bug reports. I'm going to focus on the other ones now.

I don't see 6.1 in Ubuntu's catalog:
https://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=libreoffice=names=all=all
Anyway, Ubuntu Bionic 18.04 is a LTS version with 5 years support. It is fixed
to 6.0.x.y version of LO. There will never be 6.1.x.y in this Ubuntu release.
So I think, it's a valid bug in LO 6.0 branch.

Thanks for your effort.

Ubuntu 20.04 is out. In some weeks I will upgrade. Then I can tell you, if the
bug still exists in LO 6.4.x.y.

Another problem is, that my 12 years old daughter has an old hardware with only
running 32 bit Ubuntu. There is no upgrade for Ubuntu 32 Bit to 20.04.

The problem could be the document itself, or, the document could be correct but
the LibreOffice version that you use doesn't show it correctly.

This works correctly with version 6.1.5.2 on my computer. I added
   "LE 5_0 ArbeitsauftrageII.png"
for you to see what I have on my screen. That's why I think that the document
is okay, but that LibreOffice 6.0.7.3 doesn't show it correctly. Because it
works fine here, I think that this problem has been corrected in newer
versions.

Can you give it a try to install a newer version of LibreOffice? It works well
with a newer version here, and it might work well with a newer version on your
computer also. A newer version might solve your problem. ;-)

With LibreOffice 6.1 , 6.3 and 7.0 the document opens, but I get a message that
the spreadsheet contains too many columns.

   Here are some details:

I first tried this with LibreOffice 7.0.

Loading the document went fairly fast, but then I had the message:
   Warning loading document datatool1891final.xlsx
The data could not be loaded completely because
the maximum number of columns was exceeded

This can also be seen in attachment:
   "LibreOffice70-MaxColumns.png"

I click "OK" and I thought that the program would quit, but after a few seconds
I still have the spreadsheet on my screen. Then I click and hold the scroll-bar
underneath and drag it to the right to see how many columns I actually have. I
had to do this repeatedly and at first I thought I was scrolling to the right
where there are no more real (stored) columns, but then I saw a few columns
that were slightly wider or narrower, like columns ACY , ACZ , ALW and ALX. In
the end I could scroll all the way to column AMJ.

You can also see this in attachments:
   "LibreOffice70-ColumnsACYandACZ.png" and
   "LibreOffice70-ColumnsALWandALX.png"

As a short-term solution, did you receive the spreadsheet from someone else? If
so, can you ask him or her to remove the redundant columns? Or maybe you can
open the spreadsheet yourself in Excel and remove these columns yourself?

To check if anything still needs to be improved, please add the version you are
using. Usually you can find it when clicking:
   Help -> About Libreoffice

It's most useful if you copy all the data there and paste it here in the
report.

PS:
- I'm not a developer. I submitted a few bugs/reports myself and I'm trying to
confirm bug reports from other people here.
- As I don't know the level of your expertise, I may be adding information you
already know and that's obvious to you, or not enough information.

Your screenshot is good enough. Sheets 1 to 3 are selected but their tabs all
