I think this report can be closed. The MySQL JDBC connector works fine - the
MariaDB one is to be avoided if one gets query problems, and there's a
straightforward workaround.

Tested this again with MariaDB and mariadb-java-client-2.4.1.jar and
mysql-connector-java-5.1.40-bin.jar. Nested queries fail with the
mariadb-connector, will work with the mysql-connector.
