@Internalmemo : glad that we were able to get you through the problems you were
facing !

For this kind of question, rather than bugzilla (as this turned out not to be a
bug), you might want to consider using the Ask website :

https://ask.libreoffice.org/en/questions/

or alternatively, search/ask in the OpenOffice.org forum:

https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/

Oops, made a mistake in my Reply! But also I found you CAN go straight to
Format > Page - but of course in those Header settings at top-left you have to
ensure that 'same content on first page' is DE-selected.

I can't help but think that it's all too easy for a Writer novice to not get
the right result when adding page numbers in this way, through easily
overlooking the fact that when you insert the number it has to be within the
header area, and unless you click to make the header zone show, you'll
invariably make that mistake.

Anyway, thanks to you all. I think that, as regards page numbering, I'm 'with
it' now.

A couple of things:

In my Step 6 you have to be careful that the cursor is within the header area,
before you do Insert > Page Number, otherwise the page numbering won't work out
as expected.

I suspect that it may be possible to circumvent Format > Title Page, and
instead go straight to the comprehensive Format Page (Default style) dialog,
and then set up the header/footer. I'll have to give that a try. If that works,
then I guess Dieter was basically correct. Perhaps the key thing is to always
do a pagebreak to get to the second page, and ensure there that the cursor is
within the header area? But before, I'm sure I tried all of that and it just
gave frustratingly wrong results.

Alex,

Many thanks for your input to this. Following your sequence, I simply couldn't
find some of the steps. For instance, 'Properties', 'Page Mngt tab'. HOWEVER,
some diligent searching along similar paths eventually led me to a crucial
dropdown menu for 'First (Title) Page' and 'Default Style' that I seemed to
recognise from your sequence. The dialog that those then opened was one I'd
already been experimenting with in earnest, trying to get this simple page
numbering working. Then, following the remainder of your sequence, I finally
got it to work. From start to finish, here below is what I found I had to do:

1. Open a new blank page (File > New> Text Document). Use View > Zoom to set
the default document page-size onscreen. (Is there no way of making a default
zoom level?).
2. At top of first page, type the title of the document (I normally centre and
underline it), then do a pagebreak (Insert > Page Break) to give a second blank
page, leaving the cursor on that second page.
3. Do Format > Title Page, to open a configuration dialog of that name. Leave
all selections for 'Make Title Page' and 'Page Numbering' in that dialog
unchecked, but observe there's a section called 'Edit Page Properties', which
has a Style dropdown.
4. Ignore, in that dropdown, 'First Page' and select 'Default Style' instead.
Press the Edit button next to the dropdown. This opens a more-comprehensive
page formatting and styling dialog, with a number of configuring tabs. Look to
see whether page numbering is basically set to '1,2,3 ...'.
5. Assuming the successive page numbers are to go in the Header (in this
instance), select the Header tab and ensure that all three settings at top-left
are checked. Press Apply, OK. Then backtrack out of the smaller Title Page
dialog.
6. On the required page 2 (which should still be there but is blank) position
the cursor appropriately within the Header and then insert the page number
using Insert > Page Number.
7. Now do a pagebreak, and you should see pages 3, 4, etc as you proceed.

Dieter,

Believe me, I tried all the obvious commands, like Insert > Page Number, but I
always ended up with the same number on all pages including the First page, or
the same number on all pages coming after 2.

I've followed Alex's suggestion(s). With that, I simply couldn't find the steps
to which he referred. Possibly, that's because he and you are using 6.2.3,
whereas I'm using 6.1.5 (I didn't anticipate getting involved in LO's
Feedback). However, using his steps as a guide, I've managed to find the
crucial settings and have found that Alex's basically do work.

To illustrate the successful method I eventually found, I've written out the
sequence below, in my reply to Alex. I'm assuming that you don't have to repeat
these configuring steps for each new document, unless you want the document
style to be changed in some way. Otherwise, this would be a 'right old fag' to
have to do each time.

@Internammemo :

Please also read this, if you haven't done so already :

https://help.libreoffice.org/Writer/Page_Numbers

If there is anything in that which is incorrect, please let us know so that we
can indicate it to the help page documentation team. However, if you do that,
then open a new bug report and select Documentation as the component.

This works as designed, as Dieter has indicated.

Version: 6.1.5.2
Build ID: 90f8dcf33c87b3705e78202e3df5142b201bd805
Threads CPU : 4; OS : Mac OS X 10.14.4; UI Render : par défaut;
Locale : fr-FR (fr_FR.UTF-8); Calc: group threaded

"There is more than one way to skin a cat", as the saying goes.

On the first page, set a page style, let's use the First/Title Page style.

Type a title, then force a page break

Right mouse button click on the First Page, then look at the page properties.

Under the Page Management tab, you should see :

Style : First (Title) Page
Follow-on Style : Default Style

Click on the Edit Style button at the end of the Follow-On Style entry, which
opens an identical tabbed dialog to manage your follow-on style. Choose Footer
(or Header, depending on where you want your page numbering).

Click on Activate Footer. Leave the default ticked options (same content
left/right), same content first page. Click on Apply, then OK. The dialog
closes.

Click on Apply and then OK again to close the initial page management dialog.

Click on page 2, then insert a page number via Insert > Page Number. The number
2 is displayed.

Force a manual page break and you will see a new page with the number 3 in the
footer.

No page numbering appears on the First/Title page.

I have enclosed an ODT file that demonstrates this. Made with LO6152 as
outlined above.

I can't confirm that. I don't understand, why you insert '2' on the second
page. You just have to choose Insert => Pagenumber

Perhaps you could attach a document that shows the problem (only a document
with some blak pages and the pagenumbers)

I'm afraid I don't agree.

In 6.1.5.2 there's no direct Format Footer. You have to select Format > Page
and then choose the Header or Footer tab. And yes, there there's a setting
'same content on first page'. But it doesn't work properly. That is, if you
ensure that 'same content on first page' is unchecked and you insert '2' in,
let's say, the header on the second page, you do indeed suppress '1' from
appearing on the first page. However, '2' then appears on Page 3 and on all
subsequent pages!!

I shall have to change the status of this bug back from Resolved to
Unconfirmed. (Not sure where and how to do that yet, so please bear with me).

edit: Having returned to here, I've obviously found how to re-set the status
back to Unconfirmed. This page numbering bug clearly needs further work.
