Can not confirm on OSX 10.9.5 with LO
Version: 4.4.0.0.alpha0+
Build ID: 7dc6c9af4ba313f054331f5130470d83d875bc16


Open Writer document
Type some text
select text, right mouse button click, choose Character in context menu, change
font colour
In same dialog, click on Shadow property tickbox - black shadow produced.

I don't reproduce this on Win7x64 using LibO 4.3.2.2

try resetting your user profile (backup first) following instruction here:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/UserProfile 

also consider upgrading to 4.2.6.2 or 4.3.2.2

I can NOT confirm this problem on my system. For me the shadow is in black even
when the characters are coloured. See the attached screen-shot.
