"Fix" fields are expected to show the same value on templates as well. At least
the help does not state otherwise: "Inserts the current date into your slide as
a fixed field. The date is not automatically updated."

Then please consider the possibilities:
1. I want to continue working on the document as a next "version" of the
original document (I want to use LibreOffice ~similar to "copy file" feature of
a file manager);
2. I want to use the original file as a template (create a new file based on
the old file).

Of course, both are possible; and I agree that users might expect more of #1.
Just the differences wrt this feature should be clear to avoid surprises in the
opposite direction.

not sure i agree with this ... is this really what users want? probably a
question for UX.

When you open as copy, the original document with fixed fields is used as a
*template* for the new copy; and it's normal and expected that *for templates*,
the fixed fields are updated (that is one of the reasons to use the fixed
fields instead of inserting plain text).

Dear Bugcruncher,

To make sure we're focusing on the bugs that affect our users today,
LibreOffice QA is asking bug reporters and confirmers to retest open, confirmed
bugs which have not been touched for over a year.

There have been thousands of bug fixes and commits since anyone checked on this
bug report. During that time, it's possible that the bug has been fixed, or the
details of the problem have changed. We'd really appreciate your help in
getting confirmation that the bug is still present.

If you have time, please do the following:

Test to see if the bug is still present with the latest version of LibreOffice
from https://www.libreoffice.org/download/

If the bug is present, please leave a comment that includes the information
from Help - About LibreOffice.

If the bug is NOT present, please set the bug's Status field to
RESOLVED-WORKSFORME and leave a comment that includes the information from Help
- About LibreOffice.

Please DO NOT

Update the version field
Reply via email (please reply directly on the bug tracker)
Set the bug's Status field to RESOLVED - FIXED (this status has a particular
meaning that is not
appropriate in this case)

If you want to do more to help you can test to see if your issue is a
REGRESSION. To do so:
1. Download and install oldest version of LibreOffice (usually 3.3 unless your
bug pertains to a feature added after 3.3) from
https://downloadarchive.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/old/

2. Test your bug
3. Leave a comment with your results.
4a. If the bug was present with 3.3 - set version to 'inherited from OOo';
4b. If the bug was not present in 3.3 - add 'regression' to keyword

Feel free to come ask questions or to say hello in our QA chat:
https://kiwiirc.com/nextclient/irc.freenode.net/#libreoffice-qa

Thank you for helping us make LibreOffice even better for everyone!

Warm Regards,
QA Team

In Linux locking works differently, and the same steps can't be followed
(there's no option to open a copy).

Still occurs for me in a recent 6.2 master build
(4f45687426af9b6d18b590816eb902bb364a521b). Note that the test document has to
be opened for writing in another Writer instance, and when the tested Writer
shows Document in Use dialog, Open Copy need to be chosen.

This indeed worked with 3.3.0, but not with 3.5.0, perhaps could be worth a
check with bibisect-43all oldest (unless it's really Win-only, but so far
there's no indication it wouldn't occur on Linux).

Still reproducible in 5.1.4.2.

In 5.2 there's no Open Copy anymore, only Open that ignores file locking (apart
from the usual Open Read-Only and Cancel).
