Version: 7.1.2.2 / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: 10(Build:2)
CPU threads: 12; OS: Linux 5.10; UI render: default; VCL: kf5

7.1.2-2
Calc: threaded

Tested with background image in page style ...

If you try several successive images as background ... all of them stay in
Pictures subfolder inside the odt

The only way to suppress them is to unzip the odt, suppress the pictures in
Pictures subfolder , fiddle with styles.xml and zip the whole files to have the
new .odt.

It would be great to have "something" in the ui to deal with these hidden
images

Yes, it sounds like it will take a master programmer to handle this. The very
existence of the Graphic seems to means it gets a styles.xml entry like

  

I tried "cancelling" the bitmap when selecting none with
   _pSet->Put( XFillBitmapItem(OUString("bogus"), Graphic()) );
but that didn't help (and for some reason, an empty string did even less).

This is probably true for every case where a bitmap can be specified. Confirmed
for paragraph background, footer background, frame/textbox background.

Seems NOT to be true for section background.  (Note that I cannot even see the
image in the section background, so the visual aspect is broken! However, it
does save it, but then when the background is changed to colour instead, the
picture not saved and even removed from the file.) [Section uses the old
"background" tab instead of the "Area" tab, so it probably uses RES_BACKGROUND
instead of XATTR_FILLBITMAP.]

Is there any plan to fix this problem?, I have a documento of about 200kb
occuping more than 1MB because this. Also some deleted images appears as hidden
and is a problem to remove it...

ODF is OK, the "draw:fill" problem is solved in the meantime. So I have removed
block 108198.

The problem is, that the image is still referenced in the style, although
draw:fill="none" is set. Same happens with a previously set fill color, only
that has no such effect on file size.

Tested with Version: 7.1.0.0.alpha0+ (x64)
Build ID: 1e0cfd5662d95cea84e80e4fe10d52c3b1101ae6
CPU threads: 8; OS: Windows 10.0 Build 18362; UI render: Skia/Vulkan; VCL: win

Unaware of this bug report, I investigated on this incorrect behaviour after a
question on the French leg of AskLibO.

I experimented with .fodt files. From my analysis, the culprit could be in the
page style definition (section  in the XML). The
modified page style is described by an XML element  (of course, the exact name does not matter).

Initially, we have attribute draw:fill="none".

When we add a background image, the attribute turns to draw:fill="bitmap" with
tons of additional attributes to describe image placement and repetition. A
draw:fill-image-name="xxx" is also created with the image data stored in
section  as a record  with
binary image data.

First question: why is binary image data duplicated in  ? Since there is reference to the image store, this
duplication prevents image sharing and contributes to file size inflation.

Then I reverted to no brackground. Attribute draw:fill is correctly reverted to
value "none". Binary image data is deleted BUT draw:fill-image-name="xxx" is
kept!

If there is a reference counter in the image store, this counter can't go to
zero and this could be the reason why the image remains in the store.

Second question: why is attribute draw:fill-image-name not deleted when we
choose another background then bitmap?

I then tried to remove manually the image from the UI. In the Area tab of the
page style dialog, bitmap mode, i clicked on the image in the left pane to
select it. I right-clicked the selected image and chose Delete from the menu.
The image is no longer displayed in the pane, even after exiting and reloading,
but it is still present in the image store.

I thought of forcing value of draw:fill-image-name to some other value. For
that, I set the background image to some of the gallery. This effectively
changed the value of the attribute, I deleted the image and reverted to None
afterwards. Now, there are 2 images in the store: my custom one and the one
chosen from the gallery, both unreachable.

If you can make profit of this information … (I'm no developper :-( )

This problem still exists in Writer 5.2.6.2 on Debian.

If I manually edit style.xml to remove the line referencing the old file, once
save by Writer, the old file will be removed automatically.
