Several crashes while saving in XLS or ODS with version 5.1.4.2/32 W8.1.
As suggested, I installed L.O 5.2.1.2/64 W8.1.
Saved numerous times in XLS or ODS. No crash so far.
Size file is reduced from 1.5 MO (XLS) to 0.5 MO (ODS) as was the case before.
Saves are a lot faster, don't lock the computer for +/- 10 seconds.
I will continue monitoring and report.
Thanks a lot.
The best.

No crash with the same steps with v5.1.4.2 / Ubuntu 16.04. Could be Windows
only.

I could reproduce the crash on 3rd save with the first attachment (don't need
to touch anything, just save three times) in v5.1.4.2 and v5.1.5.2 / Windows 7.
No crash in v5.2.0.4 or v5.2.1.2.
After checking with older versions, no crash in v4.4.0.3, but the crash is
there in v5.0.0.5.

Since there's a chance the file might be corrupt, I'd be hesitant to close it
as WORKSFORME, but a bibisect or reverse bibisect can now be run on the issue.

Hisanshams, in the meantime I'd suggest testing with v5.2 versions to see if
there's any sign the file could be corrupt.

Original XLS file in XL 97-2003 format made in 2006

As requested, this is the original file made in 2006 in XL 97-2003 format to
which about 150 leaves have subsequently been added.
This original XLS file DOES NOT crash LO on saving in ODS format.

So the mystery remains :
- the original XLS file does not crash LO wether saved in XL or ODS format
- this same XLS file, having been added 150 leaves along the time, crashes LO
when saved in ODS format but does not crash LO when saved in XL format.

It may have a relation with :
- either the number of leaves that have been added
- a mistake in the formulas connecting the leaves to one another or to external
files
- a mistake in one of the saving processes during the years 2006 through 2016.
During that time, MS XL was used, then Open Office, then now Libre Office.

Except if you want to fix the bug, don't assign yourself the bug.
Also, since I'm on cc, you don't have to send me a mail privately.

Also, you need to attach the xls file not the ods file so we can try to
reproduce this.
Indeed, I don't reproduce this with ods file on pc Debian x86-64 with master
sources updated today.

XLS file made with MS Excel crashes LO on 3rd saving in ODS format

I have been plagued with multiple crashes of LO while saving a formerly XLS
file in ODS format.
The crash always happens on the 3rd saving operation and does not depend on the
changes made in the file nor on its size.
This big XLS file made with MS Excel in 2006 was comprising more than 150
leaves and always crashed LO when saved on the 3 rd time in ODS format. It was
reduced to one empty leaf and still it crashes LO on the 3rd saving attempt.
The crash happens with LO 5.1.4.2 and 5.0.6. I did not try previous releases.
This files works alright with LO and does not crash LO when used and saved in
XLS format in LO.
I have not yet found other former XLS files that crash LO, whether new or old.

Would it be possible you attach an example file? (by using this link
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/attachment.cgi?bugid=101781&action=enter)

Have in mind that any uploaded file is automatically made public so follow
advice from
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/Bugzilla/Sanitizing_Files_Before_Submission

You may also give a try to 5.1.5 or brand new 5.2.0

Finally, this link may help too:
