Might be a long shot, but you could try unticking the checkbox:
Tools - Options - LibreOffice - View: Use OpenGL for all rendering

Let us know how it goes.

Even after complete uninstall and re-install the error persists on all
machines I'm using...

Sorry, as I have to work with the apps I now moved to Microsoft Office 365.

in general it should work if you uninstall LO.
i recommend to check whether "C:\Program Files\LibreOffice" folder has been
deleted and i would rename (or delete) user profile in %appdata%\LibreOffice.

reg key can beo found in: "Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\LibreOffice"

Hi, yes, lock files are created on NAS but I also had this effect with lokally
stored files. I'm sorry to not find a case to reproduce it on purpose, it seems
to be related to nothing.

One thing I realised:
When I work in "safte mode" I get a green status bar on the bottom when I use a
file with external references and click on refresh. I NEVER get this bar when
not in safe mode. I resettet the user profile several times...maybe this is a
hint.

As I said, when the quickstarter is active and the "file does not open" problem
occures, the whole programm doe not respond with any dialog anymore until I
shutdown the quick starter, then all before clicked files open up...

I'll try a complete de-install, is there a cleab-up tool for all left-over
files and registry entries?

i cannot confirm this behaviour with LO 6.1.5.2 (Quickstarter enabled)
and Win10x64:

stored 2 *.ods files on my nas (connected via smb1) and added 2 links on
windows desktop:

\\my-nas\USB_NAS\tmp\file1.ods
\\my-nas\USB_NAS\tmp\file2.ods

double clicking, both files will open, .lock files are created on nas too,
closing without crash.

can you find an event in windows event log?

I tried using the quick starter --> the error persists and changes a little:
now randomly I cannot open a file anymore. it looks like the same error as
before but related to quick starter. If I then close quick starter the before
clicked files open but without the recover dialog.

Thank you for reporting the bug.

To be certain the reported issue is not
related to corruption in the user profile, could you please reset your
Libreoffice profile ( https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/UserProfile ) and
re-test?

Can you provide more information about your windows version and
file protocol you use (smb?) ?

Which LibreOffice version do you use?
Please copy information from Menu "Help/About LibreOffice"

Do you use LibreOffice Quickstarter?
-> Menu "Tools/Options.../LibreOffice/General"
if not, please activate

I have set the bug's status to 'NEEDINFO'. Please change it back to
'UNCONFIRMED' if the issue is still present
