Go for it Jim, but move the 'drag mode' group button to the end of the second
line and replace it with a separator. We'll deal with the removal of controls
from the second line later.

Hi All,

Attached is a screenshot of what I have done for this. The first line follows
Jays second mockup minus the image labels. The second line is a rearrangement
of items presently available. The 'Navigate By' drop down and previous and next
arrows are the same uno controls used in the Findbar. The 'Go To page' edit
spin control is a new uno control created for use here. I committed it for
review a while back to granulate.

If there is interest in what is here I will commit.

I will continue working on this. The 'Navigate By' controls used in the Findbar
are able to be used in the Navigator panel content toolbar. This has resulted
in a fair amount of code reduction. Maybe this is a good place to do a commit
before diving into the headings stuff that Yousuf has suggested in the mockups?
I can post a screenshot for comments if that would be better at this point.

I would assume that the navigation stuff is a crucial part of navigator, as you
are able to jump through elements of a particular type according to a
document's order, which isnt possible within the tree view of the navigator,
and a number of the elements in navigation (e.g. footnote, control) arent
listed in the tree view.

@Cor, @Stuart, @Sophie: what is your take now that navigation is in the find

Hello all,

I have been working on implementing the ideas purposed here.

So far I have replaced the small navigator popup window button control with the
new dropdown list control that is used in the Find toolbar. I tried using the
uno scrolltonext/previous controls from the Find toolbar to replace the
next/previous controls in the Navigator content toolbar but they didn't work,
possibly due to not having a context to a document.

The Document dropdown doesn't seem to always function as intended. I believe
the idea is to be able to use any Navigator for any document?

Samuel Mehrbrodt asked for comments on possibly dropping this navigation stuff
from the Navigator.
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=79167#c38

Maybe it would be better to find a different bug to hack on?
Jim

Your proposal is much better but has still a lot of controls in the header.
Why not restrict it to functions that tweak the view below and not the
 document.

Well the mockup has the main three parts in it - the navigation controls so you
can jump up and down between various objects, the page number controls, and the
headers manipulation controls.

 Unclear to me
 * List box on/off
 * Toggle
 * Navigation (looks like a menu button but isn't)
 * Drag mode

Listbox can be removed as its only usable in the floating window. toogle can
likely be removed as its always disabled for me. navigation is already
integrated in the mockup and drag mode can be removed as its available in the
context menu.

(In reply to Cor Nouws from comment #6)
The the Navigator is floating, that shows/hides the content.

The 'Listbox On/Off' is what shows/hides the content when its floating, the
'Toggle' button is always dimmed no matter what i do.

You can drag to paste/link parts from one document to another and within the
document. That offers the choice copy/link/...

Interesting idea. :D

temporary bookmark. You can have 5 IIRC. Can via the Navigation button
 choose to jump to those.

Another interesting idea. :D

  anchor-text.

As you have to interact with the document in order to do this, how is this
slower than just clicking the foot/end note number?

(In reply to Cor Nouws from comment #8)
Missing the controls there that you didn't know the working of ;)

Had to start with the ones i understood first and add the others. :D

The only reason I could think of, is that when browsing through the
document, you don't need to leave the Navigator - all is there.

Yes i thought that might be a reason but noticed that the buttons do nothing
if you are on a page with no header or footer and also that headers and
footers dont change that frequently in a document, so there isnt a need to
 jump to them that often.

Depend on how the feature Navigator is defined?
I would not miss it, but find it heard to speak for others in such a case..

By the way, i couldnt understand what the buttons labeled toggle,

The the Navigator is floating, that shows/hides the content.

 drag mode,

You can drag to paste/link parts from one document to another and within the

Jump between foot/end notes and the marker in the text.

So a distinct position for controls that are to tweak the Navigator and those
for actions on the content/document.. OK

(Do we need to structure the document from the navigation pane? And there
would be the context menu too.)

See all the many duplicates asking for the Word Outline view.
Manipulating with the Navigator is close to that, so must be as easy as
possible to use and well visible.

Hi Jay,

Thanks :)

(In reply to Jay Philips from comment #0)

 1) Removal of Buttons - The header and footer buttons (both of which need
better tooltips) arent really necessary in an advanced feature like this, as
a user could easily click in the header or footer areas.

The only reason I could think of, is that when browsing through the document,
you don't need to leave the Navigator - all is there.

 2) Import Navigation - ...

OK

 3) Grouping Heading Buttons - Heading buttons are scattered across both rows
and it would be better that they were all next to each other.

Promote/demote chapter are a different type of action than Promote/demote
chapter. So I never found it strange or disturbing to have them a two rows.
But changing wouldn't hurt me probably.

 4) Page number label - ...

OK

 5) Content View - This view is very useful for people wanting an outline
view, like which is found in MS Word, and clears out other navigator
categories from view, so it would be beneficial to highlight the two
navigator views, even if its just a text label.

I don't understand what you mean with highlight the two navigator views
Also when all categories are shown, it still functions the same (only that drag
and drop is not possible and that the position in the Navigator doesn't follow
the cursor position in the document)

 6) Hiding 'Headings' in Content View - When content view is enabled, there
isnt a need to show navigator category 'Headings'.

What do you mean with show navigator category 'Headings' That one you refer
to in you #2?
It's also in non-Content view possible to double click a heading to jump to
it..

 7) Improving Visuals of Hierarchy - ...

OK!

Cor

Hi Cor,

So glad you got to see this one. :D

(In reply to Cor Nouws from comment #1)
The only reason I could think of, is that when browsing through the
document, you don't need to leave the Navigator - all is there.

Yes i thought that might be a reason but noticed that the buttons do nothing if
you are on a page with no header or footer and also that headers and footers
dont change that frequently in a document, so there isnt a need to jump to them
that often.

Promote/demote chapter are a different type of action than Promote/demote
chapter. So I never found it strange or disturbing to have them a two rows.
But changing wouldn't hurt me probably.

I noticed that Word also had it across two lines, though the promote/demote
level buttons had a combobox between them to easy promote/demote to another
level as well as buttons to promote it to the highest level and lowest level. I
think these additional controls maybe useful to be added as well.

Another reason to put them all on the same row was that they all get disabled
when you are not in headings, so it would be easier to ignore the entire line
of icons as they would all be disabled.

I don't understand what you mean with highlight the two navigator views
Also when all categories are shown, it still functions the same (only that
drag and drop is not possible and that the position in the Navigator doesn't
follow the cursor position in the document)

Was just stating that this feature needs a bit more focus so users may more
likely try it if they didnt already know about it.

What do you mean with show navigator category 'Headings' That one you
 refer to in you #2?
It's also in non-Content view possible to double click a heading to jump to
 it..

I had initially thought that Content View was exclusive to only Headings, so i
thought it could be removed if that was the case, but i see now that it can be
done for any of the navigator categories. As this is the case, it might be
better to replace the content view button with a combobox that would have the
list content entries in it.

By the way: is it your intention to make the Navigator in the Side bad
different than that one floating free ?

They are identical now, so i dont think there is a reason to change make them
different if they are sharing the same code.

By the way, i couldnt understand what the buttons labeled toggle, drag mode,
set reminder, and anchor-text.

I've also filed a bug to improve the page number control (bug 89553).
