That is not an accurate description. PureOS is an endorsed distribution
because it has committed to upholding the Guidelines for Free System
Distribution. It made a number of important changes from Debian in order
to achieve that.

All or almost all of the currently endorsed distributions are based on
other nonendorsed distributions -- but the changes they make are
significant for user freedom.

Yes.

You are right, they don't offer free hardware. Since I respect their
work

I wrote them an email and asked them to correct that.

It seems like they are willingly trying to unmake their reputation with
stupid misstatements like that. I don't get it…

It took Todd Weaver less than an hour to answer my email.

He says:
"Oh, joy. This is not out slogan, never has been […]. To be clear, we
are

a sponsor of LibrePlanet but we did not provide that tagline."

A copy of his email went to the FSF and it took them less than ten
minutes to change the tagline. The new tagline is: "Purism, makers of
high quality laptops" [1].

Re: [libreplanet-discuss] The state of Libre Hardware

The extent to which this seems new speaks to how extensively one has been
ignoring the rise of computing machines for which this sort of lock-down has
been endemic: ARM-based mobile devices. It applies to most ARM devices--
whether tablet or "phone", but particularly the latter--for which the
"radio" processor serves the role in which the Intel Management engine and
its AMD counterparts serves on that hardware: Running nonfree binary blobs
with sufficient control to compromise the freedom and security of anything
on the "application" processor.

It's hard for me not to wonder where we might be in fighting this sort of
freedom threat had we not spent the time of their rise holed up in the
little corner of decent hardware freedom we had left on x86.

Retreating even further to POWER architecture might be satisfying from a
purity perspective, and far be it from me to dissuade anyone with the time
and money to pursue that from doing so, but putting too many of our eggs in
that basket (now to thoroughly mix my metaphors) is a further march down the
road towards absolutely software freedom but for an ever more marginal
few.[1]

[1] Or, maybe, instead of marginal, privileged.
[2] Not really, this is purely tongue-in-cheek.

[libreplanet-discuss] Visiting LibrePlanet from Aurora, IL - USA

2018-03-08 Thread Nelson
Hi LibrePlanet people,

My name is Nelson Marquez. I'm 22 years old. Originally from Venezuela, living
in Illinois since September 2016.

I've been using GNU/Linux for the past two or three years. I do my best to keep
myself up-to-date with what's going on in the FLOSS community - use FLOSS
applications on my phone and advocate for free software when possible.

I'd love to attend LibrePlanet 2018 and for the first time, get to see Richard
Stallman alive. I also would love to be part of other talks in the conference,
interact with FLOSS enthusiasts like me and get 'cool' FLOSS swag, if doable.
(Read: if pocket allows me to.)

As usual, money is an issue. I still haven't purchased flight tickets and doing
my best to allocate funds for proceeding. I'm looking for friendly, easygoing
hosts who would spare a couch for me since Friday March 23rd until Sunday the
25th. (Read: I'd sleep in Friday and Saturday night only.)

As for food, I'd get by as my budget allows - no big deal. Fortunately, I've
been a FSF member since 2016 - when I was just landing in the US and that
entitles me for free entrance at LibrePlanet. Yay!

Looking forward to hear from any friendly person in Boston, MA.
Nelson M.

Indeed I agree, however the articles in GNU.org (search for "hardware
design") point out that the GPL is *the best* for licensinghardware
designs. The article also points out that there is no "free hardware"
because one can't really exercise the essential freedoms for things
which are already "printed out", one can only do so with the hardware
design.
