For the > FSFE this has been the showcase city case for a long time, still is. > Hey, Munich isnt much of a showcase anymore. The current Mayor and his party want to get rid of it and remigrate to MS Windows (Right now the Death Sentence hasn't been spoken yet, and the Fsfe is doing their best). The thing is, in the 13 years of GNU/Linux in Munich, the IT-Solution was never satisfying. Staff and Politicians often complained about Incompatability with Everyday-Software. Microsoft and Microsoft-Associates often tried to convince the City to remigrate by presenting cost-analysises. Politically, the Mayor and the Party that supported Linux aren't the leaders anymore, so it actually could be replaced by MS-Windows. Because at the End, GNU/Linux was chosen from a freedom and independence perspective, and the new Mayor prefers productivity and convenience, basically an age old MS-GNU/Linux argument. Re: [libreplanet-discuss] Saving up for Laptop, Free Software Discussion
Im not sure if i found the Computer you are talking about, but i found a Laptop with the name Lenovo ThinkPad P70 1. The Bios won't be free. I guess you know.2. Your workstation seems to have a thunderbolt. I am not sure, but arent these proprietary?3. Your Graphicscard has an official linux-driver (non-free) and it also seems to have a free Linux driver All in all it seems to be able to run GNU/Linux The questions that remains is, why you would spend that much money on a computer.Unless you do some really extraordinary heavy work on that thing, or plan to run a server for several thousand users, i don't know how a Computer of that price range is going to have an advantage over some consumer high end with an i7 6700K processor. If I found the wrong specs, please give us more details about the machine, and maybe plans on using it. I am setting this goal that with in the next 3 – 5 years I will have $10,000 AUD saved up to buy a luxury laptop workstation. I want to save up for the absolute best computer that money can buy because I want to have real computing power. :) The computer I am looking at is the Lenovo Think Pad P70, or its future equivalent since I have to save up a lot of money first. I know that by the time that I have saved enough money, there will be a different model available. Now what I want to ask you folks… Assuming I have saved the money needed for this computer, will I be able to run Trisquel or an equivalent fully Free Software OS on it? One thing that sits back in my mind is that WIFI will not work. I don’t want to be dreaming about buying a $10,000 computer if I won’t be able to run Free Software on it. Does anyone have any suggestions or comments? Re: [libreplanet-discuss] What does the tech setup look like in your grade school?
Well, not my kids, but my very own school looks like this:All Mircosoft Windows PCs, all "upgraded" to Windows 10.They all have free software solutions pre-installed, like Libre-Office, but those are only used by me.The Computer have the tendency to be very slow even though, they have good CPUs and turn themself off for no reason whatsoever, but what else is to expected by a Windows. The schools i have went to before had all Microsoft Windows, ranging from Windows XP to Windows 7, and of course they were also very slow. They however didn't even have Libre-Office, but I didnt bother back in the day, because I didn't even know, what free software was. Had to teach this myself years later. The Lessons are tailored for Microsoftprogramms, all but me are using Microsoft Office. I'm from germany and i am pretty sure, that every average school here looks like this. I am developing a ready-out-of the-box, open source virtual remote desktop platform and would like to investigate its deployment in school systems. My assumption is that most schools are using proprietary technologies (Mac/PC) for the most part and that a switch to Linux based platforms would bring cost savings. However, I know very little about the current technology setups in schools near me – let alone schools elsewhere in the U.S. (where I'm based) or the world. I would like to hear from people who have kids, what does their school technology setup look like? Thanks! -- Aaron E-J http://otherrealm.org http://theotherrealm.org (Blog)
Re: [libreplanet-discuss] suggestion/help. GPL enforcement.
But aren't we ourself the ones who transport software out of control? We providing the source code of our softeare, accessible for everyone. There is none to be sued. Von: PatrickAn: Fabio Pesari ; libreplanet-discuss@libreplanet.org Gesendet: 18:11 Sonntag, 5.Juni 2016 Betreff: Re: [libreplanet-discuss] suggestion/help. GPL enforcement. Could we not do the same as the proprietary people and sue those who move GPL code out of the control area(whatever that is determined to be)? Thanks
