My L110 is *issing me off!

2000-11-16 Thread Ken Hansen

Date: Thu, 16 Nov 2000 08:56:36 -0500
From: "Ken Hansen" [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: My L110 is *issing me off!

My L110 has decided to start freezing up at odd times, limiting it's
usefulness to me...

I am running the initial OS install of Win98, with no significant changes to
OS.

What seems to be happening is the sysyem will just stop, and the mouse will
disappear. If I am on the network, all activity stops, and the display
remains on, but frozen.

A power-down is required, with a scandisk (since windows was not shut down
properly), that sometime itself will freeze (or take so long to move to the
next percent done that I power-cycle and restart, usually it will get into
the 80s or 90s, then it will sit on one percentage point and I will wait 10
minutes or so, and seeing no disk activity or motion in percent done, will
power cycle).

Up until about two weeks ago this machine ran fine, able to stay up for
hours at a time, does anyone have any ideas? It is possible I performed some
recent MS update, but there doesn't seem to be a direct correlation between
the two events, but I can not be 100% sure.

Has anyone seen problems like this before?

Any advice?

Should I simply attempt an update from MS update service, and if that fails
consider the OS to be questionable and re-install the OS?

The commonality among all teh failures, now that I think about it, may be
Outlook 2000 - I didn' t relize it until right now, but that is always
running in the forground when the error occurs...

Hmm,

Ken

Hello,

I would suggest reinstalling everything from scratch. I have noticed
that Windows gets slower and less reliable with use. One way to avoid
this is to reinstall from time to time. Not the most fun suggestion
but I think that this will fix your problem.

Subject: Re: The never ending story: Hibernation and the correct partitioning

If you have a new HD in the Libretto that is 8GB or smaller, then a fdisk
followed by format should automatically put the hibernation partition at the
very end of the HD w/o any user intervention. You only need to worry about
creating the single primary partition - the space for the hibernation partition
is automatically subtracted.

I forget whether the L100 bios is capable of fully supporting larger sized HDs.
Either way, the hibernation partition will either be automatically created at
the end of 8GB, or at the end of the HD. You can test this easily by saving a
big file crossing the 8GB limit, hibernate, and see if it becomes messed up.
If so, then the hibernation is at 8GB, otherwise, at the end of the HD.

From: David Chien [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Re: My L110 is *issing me off!

Start from the basics. Verify the HD is okay.

In DOS, Run a virus checker to make sure there aren't any.
Uuse Simmtester.com DocMemory to verify the RAM is okay.
Run scandisk thorough overnight or over a couple hours to verify the HD is
okay.

The machine should not hang and should complete these w/o any problems. If
not, you can stop there and figure out what to do.

  Otherwise, Windows is simply Windows.
For the depressing results, see Microsoft's own reliability studies:

http://www.microsoft.com/NTWorkstation/overview/Reliability/RelStudy.asp

http://www.microsoft.com/WINDOWS2000/guide/professional/solutions/overview/reliable/default.asp#muchmore

While they suggest 30% of Win95/98 users experience some sorta crash twice or
more each month, they really didn't say how many experienced at least one a
month or more -- my feeling is that it's probably 40-60% of users that do.

(Oh, well, back to DOS, which never bothered to crash at all...)

Best bets?
www.ebay.com
or if you've got someone in Japan, Akihabara areas and persuing the ads in the
Japanese computer magazines.

However, do note that the L50/70/100/110 series, although discontinued, do
perform like the L30 in almost all respects, but usually better (ie. faster
CPU, more RAM, etc.). The only thing I can think of that would prevent use of
a newer model is that the programs you use require the exact same CPU used in
the L30 (the newer Librettos use Pentiums).

www.ebay.com has lots of used Librettos for sale.

Some online stores, like http://www.universalcomputers.com/index_toshiba.html
still have a few accessories, as does http://www.csd.toshiba.com/ directly.

Again, all Libertto models as of this time have been discontinued, and thus
far, Toshiba has not yet released a new model. www.ebay.com is your best bet
for Liberttos in good condition (make sure the seller has a couple dozen
positive feedback points). However, used Liberttos are also very cheap, going
for under $1200 most of the time, and often $400-800 for the L50/70 series.

New alternatives with complete warranties is the US Sony Picturebook at $2Kish.

Re: The never ending story: Hibernation and the correct partitioning

2000-11-16 Thread David Chien

Date: Thu, 16 Nov 2000 13:57:07 -0800 (PST)
From: David Chien [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Re: The never ending story: Hibernation and the correct partitioning

Besides Ontrack's and IBM's disk manager program which will let any computer
use 8GB HDs, there's this post earlier this year:

Just installed the Tosh 12mb drive in my L100 on Monday. I'm running Win95 in
my
Libretto and Win98 in my desktop, which may or may not be relevant. After a
few
gyrations, I have a 12gb partition with 78mb free at the end and suspend/resume
works perfectly, and faster than before.

The successful procedure boiled down to this:

In the L100, using the Toshiba Companion Diskette or a boot disk with fdisk and
format, make a primary partition with fdisk to max size. Then format c: /s. I
think this would also work in the desktop. After this, I had an 8gb partition.

I then transferred the drive to my desktop computer, using a 3.5 to 2.5
adapter.
With Partition Magic 4.0, I was able to enlarge the partition to 12gb, leaving
78mb
free space at the end. I had previously backed up my 4 gig drive to a hard
drive in
the desktop, so, after a restore to the new drive, it was just a matter of
re-inserting it to the Libretto and booting.

Works fine. The 12gb drive is a sliding fit, whereas the smaller drives were a
loose fit.

One humorous thing, I actually used a boot disk from my desktop, so when the
Lib was
booting it said "Starting Windows 98." Restoring the io.sys file took care of
that.

Another strange item is that PM 4.0 on the Libretto only sees 8gb, while on
the
desktop it sees 12gb.
My file manager and everything else I've checked sees 12gb, though

 Hibernation is not "Win98 hibernation".
Libretti do hibernate with Win95, Linux, and other OS in the same manner,
because hibernation is not managed by the OS, but by the BIOS.

Oops! Should have been hibernation under Win98.

Does anyone out there know if the USB port on the 1100V conforms to the USB

Perhaps someone who reads Japanese and has looked at the owners manual would
know, I have the manual, but I can't read Japanese. (Doh!)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ken,

It's very quick and easy to do.

Just lift up the strip above the keyboard from the right hand side, then
pull up the keyboard (gently). The RAM module is on the left hand
side. You need to undo one small philips screw to remove, then reinsert
the module. Put the keyboard back and put the strip back.

As long as you're gentle with the plastic strip there should be no
problems.

Cheap, easy and may help.
