5GB Toshiba PCMCIA Type II card; CFlash/SMedia to IDE adapters

My site updated with link to the 5GB PCMCIA card news release and specs.

Also, any search of yahoo.com on 'compact flash ide adapter' or 'smartmedia ide
adapter' will bring up many sites selling such for the desktops such as:
http://www.tapr.org/tapr/html/Fcfa.html

I'm sure somewhere there's one for laptops small enough to fit the Libretto.

Replacing the HD with a flash memory HD = less power consumption, better shock
resistance, and just that coolness of not hearing any HD spinning inside the
Libretto. No more HD head crashes either.

Wondering if anyone out there has already modified their Libretto so?

W2k can not be installed on a Libby 60.

W2K needs a minimum of 64k to install/run.
Unfortunately it cannot be fooled like the old NT4, that needed 32mb but
would run in 16mb after installation.

I just installed a new 20gb IBM hard drive into my libretto 60
 and get the
  message...

This basic has been aborted because
this machine has no rom basic.

You'll need to use Linux or Win2K and create at least two
 partitions, the
first up to about 8GB, the second after skipping a few hundred MB of empty
hibernation space to the end of the HD; or, you'll need to
 download and use the
IBM Disk Manager program to get your L60 to see 8GB HDs.

You'll need to have the HD fdisk'd and formatted if the Disk
 Manager program
doesn't already do that, and you'll need to sys c: to copy the system boot
files to the HD if not automatically done by the Disk Manager program.

What are the prices of the 2GB model now? Dynamism sells them for $500.
Can any Libretto boot from any of them?

I have seen some solid state IDE drives, not adapters but drives,
that would fit nicely into any Libretto. Those I saw were 128MB.
I thought hard how that could be useful.
If I had two IDE drives in a notebook
I would like to replace one with a solid state drive.
But replacing the only large disk with a small solid state drive?
How would you use this?

Help installing 20Gb hard drive

From: Pete Phillipps [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Help installing 20Gb hard drive

Hi Everyone,

Probably one of the most common Libretto questions around at the moment:
how can I get my Libretto to recognise a drive greater than 8.4 Gb? Just
picked up the Toshiba 20gb hard drive for my Libretto 110, and FDISK and
FORMAT have given me 8Gb. How can I get the computer to recognise the other
12Gb?

Howdy!!

Well, this whole limitation is a bad legacy from the past.
It's was a BIOS limitation.
Ever heard Bil Gates saying his famous words: 640 Kb is enough (ram
memory)?
They never thought that ram and diskspace would grow so big (my first 286
laptop had a whopping 1 MEGAbyte of ram, heh heh)

You need a disk manager program, or better: get Partition Manager

Check out this FAQ for most of your questions:

IDE flash drives

2001-07-16 Thread Librettino
Date: Tue, 17 Jul 2001 13:07:36 +0900
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: IDE flash drives

Here are the links about IDE flash drives I mentioned earlier.
http://www.hscjpn.co.jp/product/flashdisk.html (Maker web site: Hagiwara Systems)
http://www.pasoq.co.jp/shopping/hard/maker/9468650001.html (one web site selling
them)
On this web site the price for a 128MB model is 55,300 yen, about US$ 440.
If sombody has a use for this, I have seen this capacity on sale
and I can ship it from Japan for US$ 300 total, only a few are available.
This appears to be the highest capacity sold at the moment.

I am still thinking how I would use this.
I would like to hear any ideas.
