Being of an inquiring mind, I decided to try and find a way to build gentoo linux on the lib 70 (It starts with a minimum kernel and then builds itself, collecting new source as it goes - ah the joys of a permanent network attachment :) Unfortunately I left the thing running overnight with inadequate ventilation and it did a thermal shutdown - which is fine. On startup, I saw that the last error message was 'Hardware address mishap' !!! Turns out to be something to do with the network card - pinging from another terminal caused the same error until I removed and replaced the PCMCIA network card - and thereafter everything was fine. Curious.
