Does anyone know if Klez or Ninda keep posting day after day after day? I'm
wondering if these non-list infected posts that are coming through
mxout2.netvision.net.il are coming from one system, or a number of netvision
users' systems.

BTW - At my end things are pretty well protected on Hotmail's McAfee scan of
all attachments. I also maintain no address book there. X ... I've not
received any infected email recently at my other online email accounts, nor
to the address for my ISP mailbox. I also use Eudora for my ISP mail, not
any flavors of Outlook. And since I just setup a new copy of Eudora
recently, I don't have any addresses for any list member in its address
book.

I just want to put my few penning in too. I had my Outlook spoofed and it created major headaches for me. I got rid of Outlook immediately, and subsequently reinstalled my OS twice (Dell problems, don't ask). I have NO ONE in my address book save 5 or 6 people for the last 2 or 3 months, so I know it didn't come from me. I did receive the Powful tool stuff after I read about others getting it (hadn't checked my mail in a bit) and checked the source, saw the Israeli origin, and just today got the Vignette.
It does help to read this type of stuff, it is educational; we're not all as savvy as Neil and Ray and Mike and Pres and Chester. So, thanks guys, and please just grin and bear (bare?) it. R.

Interesting that my address showed up
in that header. I receive substantial SPAM
to this address, but just ran a full virus scan
and none detected.

Coincidentally or perhaps not, I just this
weekend un-subscribed my other email
and re-subscribed using [EMAIL PROTECTED]

If you look again, the header info says the email was received FROM
mail77.basiclink.com FOR [EMAIL PROTECTED], not FROM [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The header for the "Vignette .." post I received from the list shows it was,
"Received: from mail77.basiclink.com (65.174.102.137) by BL24 (MailMax 4.
8. 3. 0) with ESMTP id 2782080 for >>>[EMAIL PROTECTED]<<<; Mon, 29 Jul 2002
06:44:41 -0700 PDT

Checking back through my posts from the list server, most of the posts I get
are from mail77.basiclink.com for >>>[EMAIL PROTECTED]<<< But it's not
consistent. One recent one was for [EMAIL PROTECTED] and one for
[EMAIL PROTECTED] in the same section of the header.

This seems to be a function of how the list posts are routed on a routine
basis, and not indicative of a virus as far as I can see.

I got a reply from Stephane who is monitoring mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
for Dan while he's away. I don't know if she can, but I asked her to send
me the source code for 3 spoofed posts to the list if they exist on the
server. I'd like to see if those posts originated from the same SMTP server
in Israel I've been receiving non-list infected mail from.

I've been getting about 1 email every day to this Hotmail address, each with
a W32/Klez.h@MM infected attachment. And ALL of the posts were posted via
the SMTP server for NetVision's server in Israel: mxout1.netvision.net.il
...I posted email to them at [EMAIL PROTECTED] a week back, but only
got
an automated reply. I posted another to them at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
yesterday, and received a personal note from them today. They're very
concerned, and are going to be looking into the problem. I'm wondering if
anyone else on the list has received infect mail through them.

One more thing. After reading my note to Dan, Stephane said that she went
ahead and turned attachments off for the server. But I'm wondering if Dan
has already set something up to detect virus infected attachments from being
forwarded to the list. All spoofed posts to the list, first "from" Dan,
then Neil, and now this "Vignette" with Dan's address again, have not
contained any attachments. So I'm wondering if they were removed somewhere,
whether or not they may originally have contained the W32/Klez.h@MM, and if
they may originated from mxout1.netvision.net.il

What does the "for" field represent? (I can find no mention of it in any
of the smtp RFCs.)

My "Vignette" posting from the libretto list had a different "for" entry
than Neil's (it was an @home.com address). In looking at my saved messages
from this list (presumably not all infected!), this field seems to stay
stable for a few days, then change to something else completely unrelated.
July yields @home.com, @aracnet.com, @hotmail.com, and @t41.dhs.org
addresses (names deleted to protect the potentially innocent).

[LIB] Screen cleaning and AR films

2002-07-29 Thread Raymond

Date: Mon, 29 Jul 2002 20:52:57 +0800
From: Raymond <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Screen cleaning and AR films

Hi all!

I've just got a sample of that Optiview antireflective film (antireflective
is probably NOT a good term for it though, more 'smartreflective', the idea
being that its mirror-like surface reduces the 'unviewable' angle when
there's a lot of light around and even when it is at the angle of maximum
stray light reflection, the diffraction film on the surface means that in
many cases the screen is still readable albeit with a very strong 'optical
purple' cast you often see on camera lenses and the like) ... applied a
small sample to the screen and the difference is incredible, even without a
lot of light around. I never noticed this before but in comfortable viewing
light, the original slightly rough surface actually scatters and separates
out the light slightly so on, say, a 50% gray area you can normally see
little colored dots, smaller than the actual pixels (tiny, no more obvious
than on a good quality inkjet printer, I guess you could say it looks a bit
like looking through very slightly dusty or frosty glass) but with that
film on there filling in the 'roughness', the color is nice and smooth and
the pixels are sharp, a bit like a glossy photograph (but with a lot less
reflection and better saturation). Of course, with a lot of light around
(eg. with a desklamp right on the screen) the difference is between hardly
readable and comfortably readable.

Anyway, enough singing of the praises of this film, I've got a bit of a
question for anyone who may know ... before I apply the rest of the film,
I've got to clean this screen. Which is a problem because I've not cleaned
this screen for months (I used to clean it every time it got dirty but I
found myself cleaning it 2-3 times a day which started annoying me). As a
result, it has all sorts of marks on it, not all of which seem to want to
come out with a good polish with a lint-free optical cleaning cloth. Can
anyone recommend what would be good to use to clean this screen without
risking eating into the surface?

Cheers!

- Raymond

P.S. I've got a few photos showing the samples of film on the screen in
situations where it seems to make an awful lot of difference, anyone
sitting on the fence regarding getting the film and want to have a peek at
them?

The L100/110 models (plus presumably the later Transmeta based L1/L2/etc.)
all have (mono) microphone input as well as stereo speaker/line output. I
don't know if it's full duplex though.

Having said that, the L50/70's sound chip actually DOES have sound input
(but it's not brought out to a port on the outside). www.fixup.net has
details on what to solder where but in my experience you need to manage the
electrical and (if you're using an onboard microphone) audio noise quite
well ... when I tried it the laptop ended up listening to the video card
(electrical noise) and hard drive (audio noise) more than anything else!

Do any models of the Libretto have both a sound card IN (Mic)
port, as well as sound OUT? This is critical for an application
I have.

Thanks
John

As you say, Nick, it ain't pretty. But there are other issues, which is why
I've taken up this here and the other (unrelated) problem with my ISP:

o *Someone* on the group, in all likelihood, has the virus. It behooves us
to try and draw their attention to it, so that they can do something about
it. The difficulty we're having is that people don't seem to have enough
info to trace the original sender. I can't trace because hotmail doesn't
maintain the header info - perhaps Daniel can unpick the original round of
postings?

o I'm not convinced that *everyone* on this group is equally computer
literate. For example, I'm much more of a hardware and low level type than
others, who know pretty much all there is to know about (frex) the various
Windows. People join the list for info - this is surely something about
which they should be aware, no?

o Finally, I want to make sure that *I* don't end up TOSsed as a spammer.
The only way to do that is to chase down and document the spam that has my
name on it. Agreed, that's more of a problem for my ISP and the easynet
account than here, but equally, so many people know and use the nailed
barnacle account that I don't want to lose that. It doesn't take many
complaints from people who *aren't* aware of the various viruses to lose a
service.

So, I'd add my voice to Nick's: This is not, should not be, and if I have
anything to do with it, will not become a witch hunt. However, I *do* think
that we should try and locate where this virus came from, and disinfect it.
This is not a question of blame, but of self preservation. If we take the
attitude that 'oh, it's just a virus' then the scumbags have won. Not here.

Cheers,

Neil

The point has been made many, many times, but the way viri like these sods
now work is to not only send mail TO everyone in a contact list in Outlook,
but also set the FROM address to be someone in the outlook address book.

So please can we stop the witch-hunt? This list is, by and large, very
computer literate and knows the dangers of opening an attachment called
"seemygirlfriendshowernekkid.exe" from someone.

All it takes is someone to think, "ah, Neil's a useful chap, I'll add him
to my contacts", get something nasty and then for everyone else to wait for
the fallout. It ain't pretty.

Nick.

As far as I can tell, it looks like the posts allegedly from me and other
list members are courtesy the nimda virus - someone on the list has it, and
also has our addresses in his/her address book.

The other - my easynet address, which most of you will never have seen - is
not I think *targetted* at me, but more likely that my address has been
harvested from my website or similar location, and used on a forged email
spam advertising a 'change the size of bits of your anatomy' website. I've
traced it as far as a dial-in account on a uu.net service, and the same
account has been used for three separate spam attacks (I get the rude
messages from the spamees, or from mail servers when the name bounces) so
I've passed that to [EMAIL PROTECTED] to see what they do. So far, only an auto
reply, but (fingers crossed) I haven't had a fresh burst of spam bounces in
the last few days...
