[LIB] Viruses
Date: Mon, 29 Jul 2002 20:27:12 -0700 From: "Renita Herrmann" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Viruses I just want to put my few penning in too. I had my Outlook spoofed and it created major headaches for me. I got rid of Outlook immediately, and subsequently reinstalled my OS twice (Dell problems, don't ask). I have NO ONE in my address book save 5 or 6 people for the last 2 or 3 months, so I know it didn't come from me. I did receive the Powful tool stuff after I read about others getting it (hadn't checked my mail in a bit) and checked the source, saw the Israeli origin, and just today got the Vignette. It does help to read this type of stuff, it is educational; we're not all as savvy as Neil and Ray and Mike and Pres and Chester. So, thanks guys, and please just grin and bear (bare?) it. What does the "for" field represent? (I can find no mention of it in any of the smtp RFCs.) My "Vignette" posting from the libretto list had a different "for" entry than Neil's (it was an @home.com address). In looking at my saved messages from this list (presumably not all infected!), this field seems to stay stable for a few days, then change to something else completely unrelated. July yields @home.com, @aracnet.com, @hotmail.com, and @t41.dhs.org addresses (names deleted to protect the potentially innocent). *Mike* ** http://libretto.basiclink.com - Libretto mailing list http://www.silverace.com/libretto/ - Archives ---TO UNSUBSCRIBE--- Reply to any of the list messages. [LIB] Screen cleaning and AR films
Date: Mon, 29 Jul 2002 20:52:57 +0800 From: Raymond <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Screen cleaning and AR films Hi all! I've just got a sample of that Optiview antireflective film (antireflective is probably NOT a good term for it though, more 'smartreflective', the idea being that its mirror-like surface reduces the 'unviewable' angle when there's a lot of light around and even when it is at the angle of maximum stray light reflection, the diffraction film on the surface means that in many cases the screen is still readable albeit with a very strong 'optical purple' cast you often see on camera lenses and the like) ... applied a small sample to the screen and the difference is incredible, even without a lot of light around. I never noticed this before but in comfortable viewing light, the original slightly rough surface actually scatters and separates out the light slightly so on, say, a 50% gray area you can normally see little colored dots, smaller than the actual pixels (tiny, no more obvious than on a good quality inkjet printer, I guess you could say it looks a bit like looking through very slightly dusty or frosty glass) but with that film on there filling in the 'roughness', the color is nice and smooth and the pixels are sharp, a bit like a glossy photograph (but with a lot less reflection and better saturation). Of course, with a lot of light around (eg. with a desklamp right on the screen) the difference is between hardly readable and comfortably readable. Anyway, enough singing of the praises of this film, I've got a bit of a question for anyone who may know ... before I apply the rest of the film, I've got to clean this screen. Which is a problem because I've not cleaned this screen for months (I used to clean it every time it got dirty but I found myself cleaning it 2-3 times a day which started annoying me). As a result, it has all sorts of marks on it, not all of which seem to want to come out with a good polish with a lint-free optical cleaning cloth. Can anyone recommend what would be good to use to clean this screen without risking eating into the surface? Cheers! - Raymond P.S. I've got a few photos showing the samples of film on the screen in situations where it seems to make an awful lot of difference, anyone sitting on the fence regarding getting the film and want to have a peek at them? -- /~\ | | "Does fuzzy logic tickle?"| | ___ | "My HDD has no reverse. I don't know if it's full duplex though. Having said that, the L50/70's sound chip actually DOES have sound input (but it's not brought out to a port on the outside). www.fixup.net has details on what to solder where but in my experience you need to manage the electrical and (if you're using an onboard microphone) audio noise quite well ... when I tried it the laptop ended up listening to the video card (electrical noise) and hard drive (audio noise) more than anything else! - Raymond --- /~\ | | "Does fuzzy logic tickle?"| | ___ | "My HDD has no reverse. It ain't pretty. As you say, Nick, it ain't pretty. But there are other issues, which is why I've taken up this here and the other (unrelated) problem with my ISP: o *Someone* on the group, in all likelihood, has the virus. It behooves us to try and draw their attention to it, so that they can do something about it. The difficulty we're having is that people don't seem to have enough info to trace the original sender. I can't trace because hotmail doesn't maintain the header info - perhaps Daniel can unpick the original round of postings? o I'm not convinced that *everyone* on this group is equally computer literate. For example, I'm much more of a hardware and low level type than others, who know pretty much all there is to know about (frex) the various Windows. People join the list for info - this is surely something about which they should be aware, no? o Finally, I want to make sure that *I* don't end up TOSsed as a spammer. The only way to do that is to chase down and document the spam that has my name on it. Agreed, that's more of a problem for my ISP and the easynet account than here, but equally, so many people know and use the nailed barnacle account that I don't want to lose that. It doesn't take many complaints from people who *aren't* aware of the various viruses to lose a service. So, I'd add my voice to Nick's: This is not, should not be, and if I have anything to do with it, will not become a witch hunt. However, I *do* think that we should try and locate where this virus came from, and disinfect it. This is not a question of blame, but of self preservation. If we take the attitude that 'oh, it's just a virus' then the scumbags have won. Not here. As far as I can tell, it looks like the posts allegedly from me and other list members are courtesy the nimda virus - someone on the list has it, and also has our addresses in his/her address book. The other - my easynet address, which most of you will never have seen - is not I think *targetted* at me, but more likely that my address has been harvested from my website or similar location, and used on a forged email spam advertising a 'change the size of bits of your anatomy' website. I've traced it as far as a dial-in account on a uu.net service, and the same account has been used for three separate spam attacks (I get the rude messages from the spamees, or from mail servers when the name bounces) so I've passed that to [EMAIL PROTECTED] to see what they do. So far, only an auto reply, but (fingers crossed) I haven't had a fresh burst of spam bounces in the last few days...
