I don't find XP slow at all except when booting. It opens programs and
windows, all that stuff really fast and is really stable. I am still
evaluating it but as near as I can tell its the best Windows OS I've used.

I'm installing it now and it is taking hours to load up. L110 64MB

Also, the disk I got was OEM full install, yet the setup.exe does not run in
DOS mode. I had to reinstall Win98SE just to install XP.

I wonder if I will keep the 98/XP dual boot. Sometimes that works, sometimes
it doesn't...

To dual boot, you have to install OSes on separate partitions or disks. It
has to do with those MS stuff get installed to Program Files folder. If
you
install two OSes in the same partition, some files get overwritten and
cause
 problems.

Ya, except I put 98 in a directory called Win98SE so I don't expect
overwritten.

And yes, I understand the seperate partition thing, except during the setup
reboots, it offers Win98 or WinXP Setup, so I should think it COULD keep the
multi-boot on one partition.

Furthermore, I had XP on a desktop, deleted it and then installed 98 and
THEN got a multiboot menu! So I am wondering if I install 98 on top of XP
would I get the multiboot...?

By the way, to get 800x480 for the L1x0 series, it starts in 800x600
panning. You go to the DIsplay Properties ( right-click the desktop as
usual ) and on the Adapter tab, go to LIST ALL MODES. Note that it defaults
to 800x600, true color 24 bit, 60Hertz, so choose along down the list,

800x480, true color 24 bit, 60Hertz.

Note this is deceptively below the 1024x768 area. You now have three size
choices: 800x480 800x600 and 1024x768

So far ( it has been running only a few minutes ) it is very sluggish to
read from the HDD. I am trying to change the background and it takes a long
time, a very long time, to read the bitmaps...

Turns out my L50M adapter was right here at the office all along.

It is:

UA0417P01
AC 100v 61VA 50-60Hz
DC15v 2A
date 9707 ( interesting- that makes the L50M touchscreen model built in the

It is identical to the other supplies, both physically and in the fact that
it is labelled 100v. I fel confident that it is multi-input.

[LIB] touchscreen files

2002-12-18 Thread Pres Waterman

From: =?big5?B?oUVQcmVzIFdhdGVybWFuoUU=?= [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: touchscreen files

I have successfully imported the touchscreen drivers on a Japanese Win95
Libretto 50m into an English Win98 environment.

The only problem is the control panel is in Japanese with the predicatble
problems looking at it in English Win98- it's all guesswork as to the
functions. Because there are doubtless some settings regarding
double-clicking and the valid area for clicking that are not optimized, it
is not quite as nice as I remember it being in the Japanese environment but
still very good.

I am planning on using the L50M in the car with Street Atlas USA. The
stylus/touchscreen seems much better than the standard display-mounted mouse
in a moving car.

I have also utilized Win98/IE6's feature of using single-click ( like a
webpage ) rather than classic ( neeeding double-click ) to activate an icon.

However, this makes right-clicking a problem. SHIFT-F10 makes a right-click
once you highlight something, but I have no idea how to right-click on the
touchscreen using the stylus.

Additionally, Rex Perkins has written a very cool driver to make the
Japanese buttons to the right and left of the spcebar, become the Windows
and Menu ( right-click, or SHIFT-F10 ) buttons that are missing.

I will post the files for the touchscreen and Rex's keyboard enhancer
somewhere. Probably on the [EMAIL PROTECTED] files section. Or here
if Daniel tells me how/where...

My japanese version 50ct come with a A/C adapter model

 : UA0417P01

 It is labeled with :-
 input : AC100V 61VA 50-60Hz
 output : DC15V 2A

But, as I know, most notebook A/C adapter able to
handle dual input voltage (100V 220V)... Correct me
 if I am wrong.

Is this adapter support only 100V?
Are all Libretto A/C adapter like this ?

It may be a fair bet that it's 100v only - the multi voltage ones I have are
all PA2500U, 110v, 220v

On the other hand, my Japanese L50 came with an adapter labelled 100v and
yet, like so many switching power supplies, is actually 100-250v input. It's
also physically identical to the PA2500.

I will check at home to see what the model is on the Japanese adapter that
came with my L50m is, but I would strongly suspect that the unit IS
multi-voltage in. Of course, it isn't mine to blow up! ;)is

Good idea. If you use a multiple boot system with a boot manager such as
Boot Magic XP will let you boot into a differant OS without coming out of
 hibernation.

Hmm? I would think the opposite. You need to reboot to change OS and
therefore hibernate would not accomplish that.

I agree the adaptor is scary- it seems to put enormous mechanical stress on
the whole arrangement.

However, since cellphones have pretty much standardized on 2.5mm stereo
plugs for headsets, you can often pick up a cheap throw-away handsfree
device, or better yet look for one that was thrown away as defective. I
would suggest you cut the cord and solder on a stereo mini 3.5mm socket and
make a cord-adaptor.

I assume the Targus is set to put out 15v? That is necessary to charge the
Libretto, regardless of the source ( 12v, 110v mains... ) etc.

My cell phone
reaches a full charge just fine. The Libby battery level never when I use
it
on the adapter. I don't have a multimeter or breakout box to measure what
is
going into the Libby. Does anyone know of a utility that measures the
voltage and current of the power coming into the Libretto or know how to
do
it in assembly, C or basic? I have thbose programming languages availible
on
 my Libretto. \

AFIK there is no actual voltage monitor in the Libretto BIOS and I am sure
there is no current monitor. But then again, Windows is somewhat aware of
the battery status.

Anyone know how smart the battery is, vs. the internal battery monitors in
the computer?

I thought the same thing for a long time. But since it adds a system file, a
certain .vxd then I guess it should be added, it somehow interfaces the HLB
( hairy light bulb ) and the OS. Maybe nothing more than a message
cautioning you to use the Toshiba HLB when you try to use the Win98 stuff.
I don't remember, but it certainly does complain when I use Win98 instead of
Toshiba on my Satellite Pro.

I have decided to use it and the HLB.

I will say that on my L100 it mysteriously decided to ignore the panel

panel closure AND the system beeps, nothing happens. I chocked it up to the

You ALSO want the hairy light bulb. That allows differing screen brightness

No Libretto has RCA plugs. They don't even have RCA jacks ( a jack is the

Sorry Pres, I have to disagree with you there - my 100CT is as Matthew
described as well. And the 100CT parts diagram I have doesn't show any
screws securing the keyboard either.

Yep, like I said yesterday, *I* have a hole in the chassis to affix the
keyboard. It is approxinately 1/2 in diameter, and jagged edge, just like
the big drill bit I used.

( I'm kidding, folks )

Umm ... Pres, have a look at your L100/110 ... there ain't no hole in the
chassis for it to screw into. At least there isn't in the 3 librettos (1
 L100 and 2 L110's) that I've looked at ... there's a hole in the keyboard
itself but no matching hole in the chassis.

OK.

There is now!~

( Big drill!!! )

[LIB] amazing L50m

2002-10-11 Thread ·Pres Waterman·

From: =?iso-8859-1?B?t1ByZXMgV2F0ZXJtYW63?= [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: amazing L50m

Recently I had a fortunate opportunity to pick up a very lightly used
Libretto 50m. This was a Japanese domestic-only, very limited production,
Libretto 50 with a touch-screen and no mouse!

Folks, if you are a Libretto junkie like me, and come across one, get it if
you can afford it.

What a cool toy this is. I can't explain why, it seems cooler than it should
be for just having the touchscreen. But Solitaire becomes a joy, Paint
becomes a really useful painting program, you can make signatures etc... I
wonder if there is a Graffiti program for notes.

It's just very interesting.

When I get a chance I will install English Windows 9x on it, and try to get
a list of required files ( and then grab them off the Japanese HDD and post
them to the FILES section of Yahoo!groups ) so that if anyone wants to go to
English the pen touchscreen drivers and Pen Serivces for Windows are
available.

The whole deal of there being two Libretto lists, as Pres mentioned, is
another issue. From what I've read and vaguely remember, an extirely
different Librtetto list was set up as Yahoo group a couple years back.
It
died a quick death if I'm not wrong. Posts were made to it that didn't
come
to this list as I recall. But I don't think that list exists at this
point,
 does it?

Which puzzles me: why does the server decide that everything is being

First off, there are two Libretto lists ( which is beyond me... )

1on Yahoo!groups

1on basiclink.com ( the one with all the cmd:unscribble problems )

Now, the basiclink one is using a mailing list software ( I forget the name
but *I* should not since I used it myself once ) that uses an account to
recieve and remail the emails. Perhaps this is the account Daniel is using
to remail. But I thouht he was based in the US???

OK. I ordered one as well. As a retailer dealing with rebates I am well
aware that they expire without regard to oredering delays. However, since
the rebate was posted on the webpage for purchase, AND THAT SAME PAGE
SAYS
IT SHIPS PROMPTLY, I am depending on the fact that the rebate was a
material factor in ordering and if I am somehow denied the rebate I will
take it up with the credit card company. They will probably refund the
 disputed amount.

But my opinion is, if the $100 is important to you, don't dream of buying

Eh. I mean Toshiba Win95 System Controls for Libretto 50CT

Which by description says: Toshiba Win95 System Controls version
W95UL50USB4E for Libretto 50CT. Also uncludes Win95 support for the Libretto
diskette drive. WinZIP Self-extracting ZIP file displays README file. Can
also be unZIPped using PKUnZip 2.04g or equivalent. See README file for
installation/usage instructions.

I know the easy way to get this working is to go ahead and buy new Li-Ion

that I can get 4 or 6 good, working cells out of the 16 that are floating
 about these three packs?

If they're dead, pull them apart and check them

If it's possible, does anyone have an idea as to how I would test the
individual cell? I can get a multimeter pretty easily, but unless I know
what to look for, it's somewhat pointless.

A good cell has around 3v across irt

any flavors of Outlook. And since I just setup a new copy of Eudora

Remember, you need not have any address book at all... the virus pretends
it's YOU *if* YOUR address is in the infected person's book.

Put another way, I am sure it's not me because my in/ and outgoing mail is
scanned twice in my machine, and in my proxy server. However, if someone
anywhere in the world has my address ( or, in this case, my previous address
not used since before Y2002 ) in their address book, and they get infected,
it appears to be from me, although it's not.

I have a Libretto 110CT without the FDD pcmcia, my question is:

Can i use any kind of FDD pcmcia to boot with a win95 floppy.? or only the
original Toshiba FDD..?

The FDD for Toshiba Libretto ( any series will work, apparently ) is
necessary to boot. The reason is, it is not actually PCMCIA, it merely fits
the PCMCIA socket. BIOS directly speaks to the floppy. Only later when the
Windows/Linux is loaded does it become PCMCIA with proper drivers.

The NEC Ready 120LT has its external floppy plugged into the parallel port,
as another example of a BIOS-driven external floppy.

Re: [LIB] Worm Klez.E immunity

Date: Wed, 24 Jul 2002 18:25:08 -0400
From: Pres Waterman [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Re: [LIB] Worm Klez.E immunity

I just got the email below about a Worm Klez.E immunity program that
says
Pres sent it to me from his [EMAIL PROTECTED] address. But by looking at
the header, I can see it originated from: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The attachment looks more like the Klez virus itself in a .scr file.

I sent a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED], and received an automated
reply
saying that they would look into the problem.

The note I sent Pres bounced back from his ISP saying that his mail quota
there had been exceeded. Guess we know what that means. If someone knows
another email address for him, maybe you could forward this to him, though
my guess is he's already aware of the problem.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] is an abandoned account. Furthermore, the way klez works
is it takes someone's address book and spoofs addresses found withIN it as
the from address. So it looks loke someone had my old address ( all it
takes is the default put people I reply to in my address book setting to
do that, and then they inadvertently passed on the klez.

The mailbox full is indicative of the trash box I send every mail
addressed to [EMAIL PROTECTED] to, is full itself.

So, I think I ain't it

a Libretto 50/70 in the large port replicator. He has just completed
ballooning solo around the world, one of the 'classical' milestones has
just
 been achieved.

This picture was the best I found, 300 KB, be warned!

Oh yes, that is absolutely a Libretto in an enhanced replicator. By the
looks of the aspect of the screen and the metal sticker on the upper left I
would say a US-spec 50 or 70.

I reposted the link because there was a typo in it... the last letter should

Now what is the fun in that:)

Faster, bigger screen, twice the number of PC-Card/CardBus sockets, Zoomed

However I do appreciate that even if there were two models of Libretto 70,
only difference being that one had PCMCIA slots and the other had PCcard
slots, there would always be people wanting to upgrade the former to the
latter rather than swap units (but I wouldn't be one of them).

AFAIK the term PCMCIA was too hard to say, therefore has been replaced by
PCCard.

Are you sure you are not trying to distinguish between PCMCIA/PCCard and
CardBus?

Subject: Re: [LIB] Re; l110 batt size, volt amps

anyone know the size, voltage and amperage of batterries that go into the
 l110?

I assume you mean the cells that go into the battery pack? All the
Librettos between the L50 and the L110 use the same cells (to the extent
that you can replace the case on an L50/70 extended battery with an
L100/110 case and have it all work). I can't remember the details of the
specs right now but they have appeared in the list before so a quick
 archive search may help.

I don't remember the millimeter size. They are 3.4v 1,200 mAH each. 3 cells:
10.2v 1,200 mAH for the regular battery. 6 cells: 10.2v 2,400mAH for the
extended battery.

http://www.sabaoceanic.com sells 2,800 mAH replacement battery packs.

list members here won't use their Librettos for moving-map purposes ... I
don't honestly think there'll be enough traffic regarding Linux
specifically on the Libretto to justify another list for it. As for asking
about things like that, given the insufficient amount of traffic, why

It's just that the Linux traffic seems to come in bunches. Someone asks how
to build a kernal or whatever the heck you people do and then there is a
bunch of go-rounds.

As to your GPS theory, point taken, but I would propose that
GPS/map-Libretto is of use to either camp, but one OS is of no interest to
the other. Oh yes, that's right, they don't probably HAVE Street Atlas for
Linux ;)

P.S. If someone brought a Mitsubishi or a Toyota to your Ford/Kia
 dealership, would you service it?

Absolutely. We sell and service cars and trucks. We hold new-vehicle
franchises for Ford and Kia, but we do, and must, sell ( any type ) used
cars and trucks to make a living ( there is no money in new vehicles in the
US, but the franchise has peripheral values )

And therefore our shop is equipped for virtually all makes. I will say I
have never seen a Ferrari in the shop, but my partner drives a Porsche ;)

Anyone wants to learn about the car business, write to me directly. I will

Why don't you just get both ends to leave mail on the server for, say, 1

way both ends will have the same set of email.

Did I misread? I think the L100 HAS the mouse/PS2 on its mini-dock

if
that works I'll also make an attempt at bringing out the USB lines (I'll
have to find somewhere to take a few volts from to supply the USB power

course, its got no suppression core on it. I'm wondering if it might be
wise to put one on or if its a little pointless given the low impedances
 involved ...

As an Amateur Radio operator I will attest to the occasional effectiveness
of the chokes. By that I mean, sometimes they help a lot in interference
universally generated by switch-mode power supplies. Other times it does not
help. But there will never be a benefit if they are not fitted

I think that 18x64mm cells are wrong. L100 battery uses 17x67 cells..

Hmmm. Thanks for checking. Well, I suppose the extra mm will not be a
problem ( UNLIKE HDDs!!! ) due tot he fact that there is
double-sticky-foam-tape in there anyway. 3mm shorter would be a blessing as
you need some room for soldertabs and the like.

We may have something good here! I am liking the thought of a 4,000mAH L1x0

Subject: Re: [LIB] Taking the battery apart

If you can locate a very thin-bladed tool, like automotive feeler gauges
or a
thin lab spatula, work it in vertically at the ends of the battery case to
break the seam and glue joints there. Once you get one end to separate,
you
can carefully pull each case half away from the other and split the case.
(You may need to break the joints at both ends of the case with the tool
for
a clean separation.) This sounds crude, but it has worked well and avoids
the marred seam lips that you get trying to pry the case apart.

I don't agree. This method implies that once you have the ends spirited,
keep pulling. The battery has tiny hooks all along the length that will
break with this method.

  ______
_| |__| |___

if you don't mind them being broken ( I use various colored electrical tape
to keep the battery together after opening ) then pry away!

The reason why I subscribed? Well, I'm considering buying a 100ct, and
I'm being offered one with two lines stuck at yellow and green; so I
wonder, is it possible (and easy) to be repaired? Will I need to buy a
 new LCD?

Probably not easy to be repaired, also probably not really necessary unless
they are obnoxious. My 100 has a red line at the far left which comes and
goes as you flex the screen slightly as if to open it wider. That is
probably not so impossible to fix, sounds like a poor connection.

How bad is the defect, how good is the price?

Subject: Re: [LIB] li-ion cells

Seller is sabahoceanic. I have dealt with them in the
past. I bought a L100 battery from them, good so far
with a year of usage. Rated at 2600mah

Oh, my, would I recommend them! I just wrote to them today. I told them I
bought a L100 extended battery from them in December ( no details to
remember ) and that it failed in an intermittent fashion in February, and I
asked them if I can return it for evaluation.

This is what I wrote:

Hi. A few months back ( I think it was in December but I am looking
through
old feedback to see if we traded feedback ) I bought a Libretto 100
extended
replacement battery on eBay. On February 15 ( on a plane ride back from
Las
Vegas!!! ) it developed an intermittent problem where the laptop will
suddenly shut off just as if the battery was removed. It is not discharged
at this point and when powered up again it works until it suddenly powers
of
again. I do not have this problem as long as the A/C is plugged in. It
happens when the laptop is moved but is very intermittent. I have checked
for loose wires inside and cannot find any.

Could I return the battery for evaluation?

And just now, I received this response from a Mr. Thomas Vun:

Dear Sir,

I am so sorry for the problem that the battery is giving you. I am not sure
if
this is a battery or the notebook problem. If you have a friend using the
same
notebook you may let him use your battery to see if it give the same
problem.
Anywhere please let me know your shipping address again. I will send you
another
battery to try out. This battery will be sent to you FOC.
Awaiting for your shipping address.

Did you all get that? On my word, he is sending me a free replacement ahead
of receiving the bad one. This is amazing customer service. This must be
recognized!

I will definitely tell everyone of this wonderful company any chance I get.
I also intend to buy cells from them and/or get them to help redesign some
older NiCd ( heavy ) battery packs with LiOn inserts. Wow.

I am truly amazed.

Yes

No. Only on the L1x0 series do you get USB on the replicator only. And for
other info, the USB only works when the enhanced port replicator is powered
by the A/C adapter in it.

[LIB] Fw: [langalist] LangaList Standard Edition 2002-04-22

2002-04-26 Thread Pres Waterman

Date: Fri, 26 Apr 2002 15:57:08 -0400
From: Pres Waterman [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Fw: [langalist] LangaList Standard Edition 2002-04-22

Here's a utility I intend to try with my Librettos. From LangaList.

 5) Automatic Power-Off From DOS

When you exit Windows, you have several choices. On newer PCs, this
includes a total shut down where the system power goes off, just as if
 you'd pushed the power switch.

DOS doesn't offer this. There are software tools to automate a reboot in
DOS (see the free reboot tool at http://mindprod.com/products.html ),
but--- until I got the following note--- I knew of no way to do an
automatic, software-driven total power-off shutdown from DOS:

Fred, PowerOff.exe is a 835 byte (less than 1KB!) file which
will turn off the computer from DOS. It uses APM (Advanced
Power Management) to work with the BIOS and actually power
down the computer. It works in DOS the same as Shut Down
does in Windows. Some users may find it useful for their clean-
up batch files. It's freeware, available at
  http://elektron.et.tudelft.nl/~witteman/PowerOff.html I've
looked and looked, and this is the only one of its kind I've
been able to unearth.--- Bruce Fraser

 Thanks, Bruce!

 The developer says:

Poweroff.exe is an MSDOS program that is able to shutdown the
power of the latest ATX power supplies from the command line
using the APM functionalities supplied by the motherboard
BIOS. Poweroff.exe is to DOS, what Shutdown is to Win9x.

But note that this software can only do what your hardware allows: On
older PCs (where Windows gives a Safe To Turn Off message instead of
turning the system all the way off on its own), this DOS software also
probably won't be able to do a complete software-driven shut down. Older
system hardware just isn't set up for that.

But if Windows *can* turn off your PC all the way, then this software
probably also will give you that ability from DOS. Nice!
