If I could find out what resources the Power Saver is using, I might
be able to tweak the Xircom drivers to let the system boot with the modem
inserted. It works fine inserting it AFTER boot.

This is a good question. Also is there anyway to uninstall the power saver
fter installing it?

This one flew by a bit quickly. Does anyone know how to determine the
resources used by the L70 Power Saver, and/or how to uninstall it?

Thanks John. I'll have to remove my lid and put it on that one's bottom
half. Haven't yet attempted to get the screw covers off the lid to remove
it. Can this be done without marking things up, and making it obvious
someone without a lot of skill was in there?

I was going to switch LCDs between my L50 and L70 because of a spent pixel
on the L70. But I've found it's not that big a deal, and have come to live
it. I remember Neil saying to use a pointed scalpel or Exacto blade to pry
it up. Seems one couldn't help but scratch it a bit.

If you want to replace the entire screen unit, you only need a screwdriver
to split the clamshell halves. If you want to replace the LCD in the screen
unit, or swap bits of the screen between two units, you have to very
carefully lift the two 1 1/4 by 1/4 inch covers. A scalpel lets you split
the glue below it.

The instructions suggest that new ones are available for repair and should
be changed by default, but I've found the old ones stick quite nicely.

Oh shoot what an aphasia-effected memory that little tussle with a few
thousand pounds of steel last summer left me with! I forgot I've switched
lids and bottom halves a number of times while fixing that dead fuse and
other experiments last fall. Well, hopefully I can get my sound card
working in time to record Jerry Garcia and the Dead boys the next time they
come to town to play. ;-P

John,

Thanks again for the tip on this case on EBay. I decided to go ahead and
pick it up at the 'Buy Now' price of $25, and spiff up my L70 a bit.

If anyone is interested in either the top half, or the top + my L70 bottom
with a really pretty insignificant little crack by the left corner Facing
screen) port replicator screw hole for half what I'm paying for this Ebay
case, contact me off list.

Is the 50 LCD compatiable with the 70CT?

Yes. between the 50 and the 70 *everything* is swappable except the mobo
(see caveats) and keyboard.

Caveats:

o if you put a 70 mobo in a 50 case, you need to do a little filing on the
case - the connector for the port replicators is slightly different.

o if you put disks wider than 8.5mm in a 50 case, you need to remove the
transparent and white spacers from the case back.

o The keyboard connectors are different, so you can't swap them.

o There are instances where software which works on the 50 won't work on the
70. We haven't been able to prove it, but it may be that the MMS intructions
on the 70 pentium are the cause.

What... some 70s have a wide enough to accept 9.5mm HDDs without
modification? I had to remove those spacers on my L70 when I put this 20GB
HDD in.

o There are instances where software which works on the 50 won't work on

Well... I've tested, tested again, and then tested some more, and my L70
just won't boot with my Xircom combo modem inserted while it's drivers, and
the Toshiba Power Saver drivers are installed. Put the same HDD in my L50,
and no problems. And the L50's 6,4GB HDD/Win98 OS setup has no problems
with this either.

If I could find out what resources the Power Saver is using, I might be able
to tweak the Xircom drivers to let the system boot with the modem inserted.
It works fine inserting it AFTER boot.

We don't know - we're just speculating that the extra instructions are
significant. For example, Mandrake7.1 will install from the hard disk on a
32M 50 but not on a 32M 70. No rational reason, and afawk the only
difference is the MMX instructions...
