Believe me, it was with no small amount of trepidation that I took
things apart again and re-installed the 50 mobo.  And that worked
wonderfully :D .  Which I think eliminates the connector harness,
unless it was bad luck and there's a hairlight cra

That's a damn good point.  Will get the cleaning fluid out and be

The 70 case has, ah, seen better days which is why it was so cheap.
I did try things with all screws disconnected too.  Still the
same "strangeness" on the screen.

I think the most likely place is the 70s mobo connector, you're right.  
I'll give it a blast tonight and let you know the results.
