[LIB] RE: [LIBRETTO] libretto screens (and other bits)

2002-06-07 Thread Lines, Nick

From: "Lines, Nick" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: RE: [LIBRETTO] libretto screens (and other bits)

I have used this chap before for a port replicator through
ebay. I paid a good price for a full replicator with a PSU -
bonus is that the PSU is absolutely tiny! Much smaller
than the one for my 50ct, but more powerful too.

To use an Americanism: go figure ;-)

This LCD is just what I need to fix my "lined" 100CT, so
I'll order one and let you all know how it goes.

Interestingly enough, the status is "refurbished" which
could explain the price.

Regards,

Nick.

The LCD ( and even system board ) prices are almost too good to be true.
Other stuff, OK although they list the same L100 power supply more than once
at different prices

Looks like cautoin and a call is in order

I have *no* idea where this site is, or how current it is, but I just found
(while looking for something else) libretto 50/70/100/110 screens listed at
$100: http://www.mytoshiba.com/

They have a 626 US phone code, if that's any clue...

They also list sundry other bits and bobs, some at reasonable prices - 110
motherboards $100, rebuilt batterypacks (100/110 grrr) in standard ($40) and
big ($98) versions, plastic bits, keyboard.

Just thought people might like to know... Follow the links through.

Re: Screens

2001-04-03 Thread Brian Levy

Date: Tue, 03 Apr 2001 10:44:05 -0400
From: "Brian Levy" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Re: Screens

I picked up my 110CT as a factory refurb in Toronto (supposed to have been
the last off their executive program). I also bought the expanded
replicator. I'm using Win98 as installed at Toshiba. I also recently started
using the suspend feature as I take it back and forth to work daily. At
home, I was using it as a desktop, with an attached keyboard, mouse and
monitor. It actually was going to be my "main" computer and I was going to
relegate my Pentium 100mhz as a test platform for Linux or reinstall SCO
Unix which I had used for years. My wife messed up this plan and bought me a
Compaq from a computer store going out of business. Hence, having only room
for 1 monitor o the desk I had started using the Libreeto only with the LCD
100% at home, one the road and at work. I think I'll do something about the
situation at home.

As to the suspend feature, I quickly found out about the problem you
mentioned and found that I needed to remount it on the port and after a
couple of power button hits, it will boot then I can shutdown and unmount
without any problem. Not a real problem for me other than procedural
training since I use it at night, shut it down and unmount it. First thing
in the morning I turn it on to review my schedule, update my REX (really
neat with the 110CT, sort of like having 2 PDAs), and close the cover.

The only time I've had a problem with the enhanced replicator was recently
when the computer decided to created a new hardware configuration while
docked. Possibly I messed something up b/c I was attempting to work with a
network card which I had not done before. After it would not boot correctly
in standalone. I finally deleted all but the default configuration, and
allowed it to reconfigure first in standalone mode and then in the dock.
Since then no problem. I've had the unit for just a year so - knock on wood.
I do not use the infrared port or USB so I may have an issue but don't know
it.

I'm not sure what BIOS my unit has and I'm not sure how to check.

It is like having the best of both worlds though, with the full-size
keyboard, monitor and mouse when I'm at my desk. And the LCD screen doesn't
get any hours on it this way as it is blanked automatically when using the
external monitor port or closing the lid.

I've used the 100 and 110's as my only computers using the 2 kinds of port
replicators (docks) ever since the 100 first came out. I use the PS/2 port
for the keyboard and the serial port for the mouse when using the
non-intelligent dock. The monitor-out port works very well on both docks.
The enhanced dock doesn't work very well with my 110 for some reason. So
much for enhancements.

What I have learned using W95 on the 100 and W98SE on the 110 is that
neither likes the suspend, resume, or any other shortcut to undocking. They
ultimately result in having to reset the machine, if not after the first
cycle, surely after a few times. The only thing that I've found that works
reliably time after time is simply to shut down the computer prior to
undocking, then go through the whole normal rebooting process again once you
have taken it out of the dock. This is kind of a pain though and I'd
appreciate any tips you all could offer on this topic. I'm using BIOS 7.30
on my 110 with W98SE if that makes any difference.

   Thanks,
I know of the limited life of LCDs in general but, considering the thread
I
thought the screens on the Librettos were more failure prone. Still,
maybe I
should think about a monitor for when I use it at home in the office. A
few
dollars now may save a lot of grief a few years down the road. I do
expect
to keep this puppy around longer than most of my other computers past or
present. Best PDA, meeting memo master, notebook, legal research tool

Depends on what conditions you use it in. About 1000-5000 hours for most
  LCD
panels before the light diminishes to 50% brightness, which you can then
replace. The LCD panel itself will last decades if not exposed to extreme
temperatures and if it's not exposed to direct sunlight for hours on end
  (any
and all direct sunlight exposure of LCD anything - watches, laptops, etc -
  will
eventually result in darkening and failure of the display.)

I'm not looking to buy screens as I have a working spare - but don't you
