Q: How will Fossett keep in touch with Mission Control at Washington
University?

A: A laptop computer will be Fossett's primary means of communicating
(by satellite e-mail) with Mission Control and his meteorology team.
Transmissions will be sent via the INMARSAT C satellite, which sends
the data from an antenna on the balloon to a satellite and on to
receiving stations on Earth. It operates at approximately 2,400 bits
per second.

Ah - no wonder his unsubscribble attempts have become less frequent...

Looking at the pictures of Steve Fossett sitting in the cabin, it seems he
has
a Libretto 50/70 in the large port replicator. He has just completed
ballooning solo around the world, one of the 'classical' milestones has
just
 been achieved.

This picture was the best I found, 300 KB, be warned!

Oh yes, that is absolutely a Libretto in an enhanced replicator. By the
looks of the aspect of the screen and the metal sticker on the upper left I
would say a US-spec 50 or 70.

I reposted the link because there was a typo in it... the last letter should
be a g not a y.

Thanks

Why isn't he subscribbled to the list?
Maybe he is, but he just lurks...

He was, 5 years ago. 3 years ago, he tried to leave but unsuccessfully
unscribbled for a year, then gave up and took up ballooning to escape
 the Internet traffic.

I remember this guy! Wasn't he an unsubscribbler, not an unscribbler?
