I am one of the guys who met with Michael Berlant when I had a L50. (Very
nice guy, missed the home cooked food. Mr Mrs Mike san, Ogenki Desuka?)

Basically, Sim Lim Square is the only place that I must visit for computer
related purchases. However it seems that a brand new lib is extint now! Oh
yes, the authorities are doing a fantastic job in enforcing the anti-piracy
law.

However If you do not mind a resale unit of any other manufacturer, I may be
able to help though. Just a few months back, my wife bought a "one week old"
notebook c/w unfiled warranty card (not a lib) for S$1000 lesser than a
brand new one. One gets lucky if the shop owner has a seller, it depends.

RE: Libretto in Singapore

2001-03-19 Thread Michael Berlant

Date: Mon, 19 Mar 2001 10:27:20 -0800
From: "Michael Berlant" [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: RE: Libretto in Singapore

I haven't lived in Singapore for two years now, so my information may be out of date,
but here goes.

There are two places to go for computers and electronics. For computers, I would make
my first stop Funan Centre. They are located at 109 North Bridge Road, and they have
a web site at www.funan.com.sg. You'll find most anything you want there in the way
of pre-packaged systems and laptops, and a lesser assortment of parts and components.

If you want to work harder and save a little more money (in general), head over to Sim
Lim Square. Sim Lim Square is at 1 Rochor Canal Road. There you'll find about 1,000
shops on 6.5 floors. The shops in Sim Lim generally pay less attention to ambience
than to product and price. Also, Sim Lim has a higher percentage of Home Electronics
than does Funan Centre, but is also about four times the size.

Funan Centre is about a 3 minute walk from the St. Andrew's Church exit of City Hall
MRT (Singapore's subway system) station. Sim Lim Square is about 8 minutes' walk from
Bugis MRT station. If you want to save time and effort, you can just jump into any
taxi and get there for not much money. I mention the MRT stations so that you don't
get into a taxi only to enjoy a 15 second ride up the block. When in doubt, ask your
hotel's front desk for directions.

There are a couple of Libbretters I know of in Singapore, although I haven't heard
much from either one of them recently. Maybe one of them will chime in with more
up-to-date information.

Good luck.

Dear list members,
I am visiting Singapore next week for a few days, as a stop over on my way
to Australia.
Can anyone recommend whether Singapore is a good place to buy computer
products (ie cheaper than UK prices !) and if so, recommend any PC stores in
Singapore.
I would dearly like to upgrade my 50CT.
Thank you,
Mike.

From: Viboon Chaojirapant [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi Michael,

There are only 2 places that you need to visit.
Both are already mentioned by Michael Berlant in
another email: Funan Center and Sim Lim Square.

Funan Center is more "up-class" in terms of
ambience and product. Currently, most major brands
have setup their retail center there. For example,
you'll find shops by HP, Gateway, Acer, Epson,
Canon. Apart from that, most shops are also
authorized re-sellers of major brands like
Toshiba, IBM, Palm, Handspring, Fujitsu, Compaq
etc. Basically, if you want to buy branded desktop
or notebook, you should visit Funan first.

Sim Lim Square is very different from Funan
nowadays. The pirated CD shops are all gone now.
In their place are many, many shops selling
computer parts and accessories. Basically, if you
want to build your own PC, this is _the_ place to
go.

Generally, prices at Sim Lim Square will be lower
than Funan. However, you may have to put up with
bad service and the crowd (very crowded during
weekends!).

I am not sure what products you have in mind, but
it is good to check out this website:
http://www.hardwarezone.com/

It is a Singaporean website. There is a
"pricelist" section which features a comprehensive
list of prices for computer parts and notebooks at
Sim Lim Square. The prices are actively updated.
If you can't find what you want there, maybe you
can ask me, since I go to Sim Lim pretty often. :)

BTW, usually the prices include GST (3%) already,
but if you are paying by credit card, do expect
the shops to add additional 3% to the price.

Hope this helps.
