Graham,
I just checked your example with the latest jEdit (4.3 final) and latest
LilyPondTool 2.12.894 and it seems I managed to fix the problem in a
recent release :)

Although not completely without problems, once it's set up, jEdit is

As I said, this flexibility is not provided.
Which bar lines have this side-effect is currently hardcoded in C++.

Jpedal has some bugs regarding rendering the default text font. I could fix
most of them but some are very hard. That's why i call it preview.

As there is an up-beat at the first of the piece, the last measure is also
up-beat.
So lilypond doesn't give bar number to the last measure. But I want to show

Yeah, that's a trick I've used from time to time...
But I'm thinking of a more general way, e.g. using SpacingSpanner

Cheers,

Graham,
Your file produces *no* blotches for me with this setup:
Ubuntu 9.10
LilyPond 2.12.3
evince (GNOME Document Viewer) 2.28.1
What is your setup? Does the blotch appear on paper when
you print it out? Are you using any included files or have
you altered the default command line options?
