I was thinking of changing side bearings only.
I looked into *.mf files of Feta and noticed that there is some
kerning data applied to number glyphs. So I would:
1) remove kerning
2) set the same glyph width for all numbers.
Any progress?

in placing a dynamic at the end of a bar.
Stephen's 2 solutions are quite effective in some cases, but so far as I
can see cannot be made to work when there is a single note (e.g. a
semibreve) which has to carry the hairpin.
