Very excellent, and a different approach from the one I took. I do like
your title page :-)
I shall have a closer look later

Not really... I'd like to have the tempo mark aligning to the time signature,
but shifting a little horizontally if it collides with a rehearsal mark.

Actually, this doesn't work when there's a time signature in the same bar...

Hi Kenneth,
please note that \mark is not a post event, but works similar to \tempo, \clef,
\key, etc. So \mark is not linked to the previous note, but it stands by itself
in the place you put it.
Cheers,

When rehearsal marks and tempo markings coincide in the same bar, the rehearsal
mark is shifted slightly upwards to avoid a collision, and ends up in an
awkward position...
See "B" in the following example:
\version "2.19.55"
\score{
{
r1
\mark \default
\tempo 4 = 120
r1 r1
Hi Hans;
Thank you!
Your gut feel was 100% correct. It is so obvious to me now after
you mention it. Moving all "\mark \default" instances to the last
note of the previous measure solved the problem.
Thanks,
Ken
