tool (which I also loved till they broke), is a dedicated Lilypond
environment.

were successful.
According to the internals manual the context for
System_start_delimiter_engraver is Score, not staff. Try removing the
engraver in the Score context.

Something simple
In 2.13.6 I did a project and used:
\set Score.markFormatter = #format-mark-box-alphabet
and I got the boxes and the letter I (all in one command!)
