My Debian version is Squeeze (oldstable),
with default LilyPond at version 2.12.3-7.
Has any of you successfully upgraded LP
to version 2.18.0-1 on that system?

Debian testing, despite the name, is very stable and it has 2.18. If you
want to keep the oldstable you can add testing repository
