Check out the manual section on drum notation. There have been some
syntax changes.

Next problem - my music now goes through lilypond book successfully, but I
don't seem to be able to process the output.
I have a script that does:

I believe that in 2.6, you need to add
\usepackage{graphics}
to your lilypond-book file.

If I do a dvipdf volume2.dvi it gives the following output:
