I finally managed to figure out the installation on my own! Thanks anyway
for your reply -- I was able to successfully run test.ly this morning. I'm
looking forward to trying out Lilypond now.

I just installed the windows release (1.8.2-1), and using double-clicking
test.ly produces a) a need to select Acrobat reader, and b) Acrobat simply
tells me that my file is corrupted (which it is not). How do I launch
Lilypond? Clearly, it needs to do some processing!

I've made a new version of LilyPond available for download.
As a special attraction 1.8.2-1 associates .ly files with an editor.
Double clicking a .ly file will generate the PDF and open your
favourite PDF viewer. Feel free to share your comments and
suggestions on this new feature.
