What LilyPond version do you use? Are you sure it's an ordinary 'u' that fails and not any ú or whatever? Sounds very strange to me. If you wish, you could send some small example PDF file as an attachment to the mailing list (or even better, put it on some web server), otherwise it's hard to say

Lilypond not working

I think I followed the instructions in http://lilypond.org/web/install/windows.html correctly, but Lilypond outputs an empty pdf. For installation I used the Download Without Installing option, and then ran Setup again and used the Install from Local Directory option. Here's the test.log:
