But being able to align it to something might be simpler as often I have
room either on the note before or the bar.

were very familiar with it simply because your brain would 'fill in' the 'gaps'
and compensate for the compression 'failings'.

I believe you could use a \bar type construct but you have to manually
create the last bar anyway, so it's as much work for the whole piece as not.

Thanks... btw, I'm completely hooked on lilypond after only a little bit of
use. Everything that I hated in Finale seems to be much better handled here :)
